I'm thinking of making a survival knife some what like the Spetsnaz machette but without a hollow handle. Can you think of anything missing from it or others that you wish they had? Share your thoughts

Maybe put a dimple in the handle so that it can be used as a fire spindle.

Often bushcrafters have to carry a small rock or a piece of wood in their fire kit to use as a spindle when making fire with a bow drill.

If the handle has a small dimple in it they can use the handle of their knife instead of carrying the extra piece as kit.

A hamburger, so I could feed him his last meal while I was killing him.

A mirror, so he could see the look on his face.

Another mirror, so I could make sure nobody was sneaking up on me.

One of those bulb horns, so as to lighten the mood a little bit.

A "Crocodile Dundee" bumper sticker that says, "That's not a knife...THAT'S a knife!" Again, just for a chuckle.

Racing stripes for added speed.

Harley-style handlebars with colorful tassels.

A gun, just in case.

Buy a bunch of cigarette lighters and put them individually in ziploc baggies, then put them in your pack, instant fire.

Steel is the most important element. It should be high carbon steel with a good rust proof coating. Easier to sharpen, stronger and holds and edge better than stainless steel.

By the sounds of it, id need a hollow handle for all of that but having a hollow handle compromises the strength of the actual blade, which I intend to design to be able to pry or dig or chop so it will need all the reinforcement it can get. Good ideas still though

You don't want any goofy hollow-handle gimmicks.

You want a tang that goes all the way through the handle adding strength and power to the blade.

You don't want any gimmicky serrated edges or anything, the knife will mostly be used like a hatchet.

Re: If you were to make the ultimate survival knife/machete what would you put on it?
I would try to design a hammer head into it for pounding stakes in the ground and nails into things. You could put it on the base of the handle and turn the whole unit upsidedown to hammer, or down at the tip. maybe even just a flat heavy steel surface at the butt end of the handle would work using it pile driver style.

Numerous times I've wanted to pound somethng or other with mine and tried with the flat of the blade but it never works well. You can't generate any useful force and the shock transmitted to the hand is never pleasant. If you could put one on with good overall balance and not a ton of extra weight, put it up for sale, I'd buy one.

Yeah I've heardfiles actually make pretty solid blades. But Im going to need a much wider piece of metal so it would make for a decent shovel and add weight to it. How big of a file do they make?
