You all are confusing race and ethnicity. A Caucasian person does not necessarily have ethnic roots in the Caucasus mountains! And a 'Caucasian' can be any shade from albino to dark brown. Does 'whiteness' REALLY matter to anyone? My Algerian friend has olive skin and self-identifies as White.

On another note, Algeria has been occupied and invaded bazillions of times over the eons, and though the population is originally mostly Berber, many other ethnicities and shades of skin are part of the whole mix. Just like America.

If you don't like someone else defining your race or ethnicity, why try to do it for those you know little about? Just ask directly, then believe what they say. In a global population, race is irrelevant. We're all Homo sapiens, just a very few genes away from monkeys!

Papadom, am Algerian myself and i assume that you must be Kabyle just reading your post. You Berbers think that the whole people of Algeria are Berbers but you seem to forget about the Arab invasion. I am Algerian Arab descendent and am not a Berber. My people came from Arabia during the invasion of what we used to call "jezirat al maghrib" where Berbers where already living. So i am an Arab and a Semite by the way.

Our official language is Modern Standard Arabic (literary Arabic) and most people speak an Arabic derived dialect called Darja.

The real origin of Algerians is Berber(Kabyle), there was no arabs when Berbers exist (In about the 4th century). But after that, in the 12 century arab entered Algeria with their ISLAM, but they stayed(they passed from other country but they left Islam there and they moved)... so what i'm saying is what we see here in Algeria is an ARABS COLONIZATION, because arab people are all morons, they don't neither want to search for the real origine of this country nor to understand all this, so all what they is to try the possible they can to make this county ARAB(that was their goal and congrats they did it... :/)...and by the way, Berbers and Caucasians have the same racines... I'm from Algeria And I know best about skins here, Well you can find white skined people mainly in the north called berber, they can be very white, I am one of them and blue eyed too, there is arabs ( I mean by that brown light or dark brown) in the north and in the upper middle of the country, and black skined in the south ( in the desert ), So you can't call algerian neither white nor arab nor black because there is too many people with different skins with no real dominant skin colour in the country.

If having a very light skin makes you white, then I'm white, if its not only the skin colour, then maybe I'm arab, I don't really know or care, however, I would say, in algeria we have :
15% dark black skinned people
60% mixed-shades of brown skinned people
25% light to very light white skinned people
But I don't know why it's so much important to know the race name, However I'm mostly attracted to girls of my own colour more than others, also I'd like to keep our line alive
