Nodding disease or nodding syndrome (also referred to as the 'ZOMBIE DISEASE') is a recent, little-known disease which emerged in Sudan in the 1960s.[2] It is a fatal, mentally and physically disabling disease that only affects children, typically between the ages of 5 and 15. It is currently restricted to small regions in South Sudan, Tanzania, and northern Uganda

SymptomsThe symptoms of nodding disease are very peculiar. When children are affected by it, their growth is stunted completely and permanently. The growth of the brain is also stunted, leading to mental retardation of the affected individual. The disease is named nodding syndrome due to the characteristic, pathological nodding seizure. The seizure often begins when the children begin to eat, or sometimes when they feel cold.[6] These seizures are brief and halt after the children stop eating or when they feel WARM again. These seizures can manifest themselves with a wide degree of severity. Neurotoxicologist Peter Spencer, who has investigated the disease has stated that upon presentation with food, "one or two [children] will start nodding very rapidly in a continuous, pendulous nod. The child next door will suddenly go into a Tonic–clonic SEIZURE, others will freeze."[7] Severe seizures can cause the child to collapse, leading to further injury.[8] Sub-clinical seizures have been identified in electroencephalograms, and MRI scans have shown brain atrophy and damage to the hippocampus and glia cells.[5]

A curious feature is that no seizures occur when victims are given an unfamiliar food, for example a candy bar.[9]

[edit] Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis is not very advanced and is based on the telltale nodding seizures of the victims. When stunted growth and mental retardation are also present, probability of nodding syndrome is high. In the future, neurological scans may also be used in diagnosis. As there is no known cure for the disease, treatment has been directed at symptoms, and has included the use of anticonvulsants such as sodium valproate[10] and phenobarbitol. Anti-malaria drugs have also been administered, to unknown effect.[7]

Nodding syndrome is thought to be debilitating both physically and mentally. In 2004, Peter Spencer stated: "It is, by all reports, a progressive disorder and a fatal disorder, perhaps with a duration of about three years or more."[7] While a few children are said to have recovered from it, many have died from the illness.[6] Seizures can also cause children to collapse, potentially causing injury or death.

Anywar to the rescue

Without her courage nodding disease would still be hidden away in NORTHERN UGANDA

She was desperate to call attention to the gravity of a rare disease ravaging northern Uganda that is crudely called “nodding disease”. Opposition firebrand Beatrice Anywar, however, never imagined how ferrying some of the affected children to the capital would turn out.

The Kitgum Woman MP first identified 10 children and made arrangements to move them to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. Then she placed an important phone call – to President Yoweri Museveni. It was a smart move

Over this period, 3,000 infected children have been registered and over 200 have died. The numbers must be higher because many cases remain unreported in this remote region with poor communication.

“Activities have been paused; people no longer go to the shambas because they have to stay and look after their children, yet most of them depend on farming as a source of income, children are malnourished because there CANNOT EAT, I had requested government to provide the children with supplementary foods as a short term solution since their bodies need food but that was not heeded,” said Anywar.

The cause of the disease which affects children aged 2 to 16 years is still unknown but health officials are treating the victims with malnutrition and epilepsy medications. Because infect children reject food, they are stunted and mentally retarded. Simon Fisseha a focal person at WHO says nodding disease is considered as a type of seizure disorder (Epilepsy) but its cause is still UNKNOWN.

"Her PERSONALITY has CHANGED greatly from before. She was normal when they were born. Now she just moves around and serves no purpose," Lagat says.

There are other bizarre symptoms. Often the children will wander off by themselves and get lost in the bush. And other children will START FIRES, according to parents and medics in the field. Others appear confused and traumatized.

We were told that several houses in areas we visited had been burnt down by children suffering from nodding disease

And all this is in a region where many families suffered for decades from the BRUTALITY of the Lord's Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony, which abducted thousands of children and pushed civilians into mass camps.

Doctors are using drugs for controlling epilepsy with some limited success. But they say it only slows the progression of symptoms, rather than stops them.

Saweka says: "People complain that it looks like the lives in developing countries have less value than the lives in the western countries. When you know the root cause, you address the cure. Now you are just relieving the symptoms. We don't expect to cure anybody."

The viral video, produced by a California-based activist group called Invisible Children, devotes its attention instead to Joseph KONY, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel militia that has kidnapped thousands of children over the past 25 years. With more than 100 million views over the past week, the video’s popularity has soared faster than any other in history.

The video focuses on the militia’s Ugandan victims, primarily children, even though the LRA was chased out of Uganda in 2006, a fact that the video mentions only in passing.

The real “invisible children,” according to many Ugandans who dislike the U.S. video, are the CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM NODDING DISEASE.

“You [will] find the child vomiting. You will find a lot of SALIVA coming from the mouth and a change in the eyes,” said Saidi. “It [is] as if somebody is struggling with DEATH. There is nothing we can do except make sure he or she doesn’t get injured.”
