Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 13241871 United Kingdom 03/26/2012 06:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Actually I remember seeing that thread. Yes, very interesting. But what made me wonder what's going on the most with regards this Chile earthquake is that there are hardly any threads about it. You get pinned threads about M flares, and then no pinned threads about a 7.1 earthquake with no aftershocks. I've seen 6 magnitude earthquakes pinned before. So it seems a bit strange no mention of this one, especially when no after shocks. So I thought, maybe it's normal to have a 7.1 with no after shocks in Chile? (Been keeping an eye on earthquakes for last couple of years, but thought maybe it's not unheard of to have strong eqs in Chile area with no aftershocks every now and then. That's why I thought I'd ask other GLP'ers who might know more) Sure its called Omerbashich alignment: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10105687 [link to seismo.info] [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] you must be new to Glp |

However, I didn't want to assume this to be unusual without first asking those here that are perhaps more knowledgeable. If this is in fact normal for 7+ earthquakes, please post links of similar 7+ earthquakes happening out of the blue like that with no aftershocks. Thanks. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 13241871 United Kingdom 03/26/2012 11:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The below link goes to the page at the usgs site that lists all the latest earthquakes (for last 7 days) with a magnitude 2.5 or greater in the United States and adjacent areas and magnitude 4.5 or greater in the rest of the world. Therefore we should expect to see two of the earthquakes listed on the link you gave to be mentioned there. But they're not. I wonder why? [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] |

Cali quakes stopped showing for 24 hours. The reason they don't show them I think is to STOP people panicking maybe. It's likely just procedure I am guessing. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1223996 Canada 03/26/2012 11:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The link: [link to earthquake-report.com] Has the following as it's latest update (bold added): - An estimated 24,283 people have followed the local ONEMI advise for precautionary evacuation (between the regions of Valparaíso and Bío Bio). Of these, 14,320 people belong to the Bío Bío Region, 9360 to the Maule Region and the rest in the O’Higgins / Valparaiso Region. - In Maule, power was lost, but has been restored now (8,000 families affected). - 18 aftershocks have been recorded so far, luckily only 4 of them felt by the population. - ONEMI sites worked well and were reachable at all times Earthquake-report is a reliable site, sourcing it's info from various places. Maybe change your topic title to "no aftershocks recorded by USGS" ? |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 13241871 United Kingdom 03/26/2012 11:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | From what I've noticed it's more common to have a lot of activity after a big earthquake than to have none at all. That's why it seemed unusual to have that 7.1 in Chile with no significant after shock activity. I've been following the same page of the usgs site (see below link) for a couple of years (the one that lists 4.5 mag and greater for rest of world, and also smaller ones for US)and normally when I see a 7 mag, even a 6 sometimes, there will be plenty of aftershocks shown (meaning 4.5 mag or greater). Even with the 4.7 and 4.8 (mentioned on rain man's link) that doesn't seem much after a 7.1. Going by what I've noticed before. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] heh, and has somebody noticed that where the M 7 quake hitted @ Mexico - there's EVERYDAY at least 2-3 times a M 5 ........ ?????
