A Car Salesman Deliberatly Tried to Screw Me.
So I'm at the car lot, huge place and I'm looking at a new car. So a sales man comes up and of course notices that I'm wearing a John Deere hat so he immediately become my all time John Deere best buddy. Blah Blah Blah. Oh how he loves John Deere and me. They look for stuff like bumper stickers, t- shirts, hats, fishing poles, you name it in order to become your all time best of all buddy, ya know.
But anyway. So I know that I have good equity in my car and I know that they could make 10K easy off of it. So I tell my all time new best John Deere buddy that I'll trade mine in and want $3000 in cash plus my car for the car we're standing in front of. He say's, "I think we can do that, come inside."
So we go inside and he huddles around with a few other salesmen. They go check out my car then come back. He say's they can do it and tells me that my payments are going to be $XXX per month. I say, WHAT? Thats way too much.
And you know what he says?
He says, "Well! The $3000 is going to cost you $XX per month.
At that point I stand up and say, WHAT? I don't want to borrow $3000 you idiot. I don't want $3000 tacked onto my auto loan. I want YOU to pay me $3000 cash with my trade in.
OH! He says, we can't do that.
So that's when I walked out.
So I get home and wouldn't you know theres a message on my answering machine. It's my bestus of all new John Deere buddy salesman.
Oh mr. So and So! I'm sorry we miss understood you over the $3000. I talked with my boss and he say's that we can do that. We can give you cash." OH NO YOU CAN'T! You tried to screw me buddy! And now! I DON'T TRUST YOU.

Been there, done that. Basically if you want to buy a new or used car you are asking the be royally screwed. If you object they confuse you with numbers and other add ons so you can't possibly figure out what they're doing to you and then if you sign up when the fog lifts you find out you overpaid and they just called you a stupid sucker!

We need experienced agents to deal with these jokers and crooks if we don't have the time to study up on their methods. It might be worth paying a premium to an agent, unless of coursse they decided to play both sides! Why not, it's about the $ not the people.

He may not have been out to "screw" you...I have found that many people in sales positions have no idea what they are selling or they have no info about promotions or advertised discounts. He may have simply been clueless.

I find that it is very important to be completely knowledgeable about what you want and what you want to pay for it. With NO emotion, lay it out and end the "conversation".

Some more detail would be good...fill in the Xs...then we could get a better idea of the "deal". I would really like to know what kind of car would have $10K in "equity".

Yes sir... that's the way I buy them.... I've been in the car business for 11 years. I have been a salesman, finance manager, and sales manager.... OP, maybe the guy did screw up. But, you are probably right. If they called back with a six thousand dollar swing, you were getting fucked... plain and simple.

With that said, there are also many honest, hard working people in the retail auto business. But there are crooks in every line of retail and wholesale as well... not just the auto business. I don't take offense to your statements (not that you care) but i thought you should know that we are not all like that.

If you are going into a dealership uneducated, the best thing to do (and i know no one like this) is to negotiate the numbers at least three times and then leave... go back the next day if they dont call you and hit them lower one more time...

In the end we want to sell the car, and will.... We also want and need to make a profit in order to feed our families...

The last time I bought a car they pulled this BS. I didn't have my financial calculator with me so the easiest way for anyone to do this is negotiate the trade/cash you want first and then when they give you the high payment, go to THEIR website on THEIR computer, type in the terms and tell them you want *that* payment. That pisses them off but they reluctantly agree.

A new car isn't hard to buy.

1. If you're going to trade in, find out the average trade value from the web.

2. Pick the car you want.

3. Make them show you the factory invoice. Work up from there, usually I'll offer $100.00 over invoice if it is the current year model. (sometimes they have left over last year models, always pay less than invoice for these... like $1500.00 less)

Subtract all rebates from the agreed price. (for example $100.00 over invoice. Minus all rebates, and minus your trade)

If they won't give avg trade in for your vehicle... take it out of the deal, and sell it yourself.

(also refuse to pay for: undercoating, fabric treatment, window etching, kill switch, or any other adds that the dealer put on themselves. They do this crap on purpose and mark it up like crazy. They need to eat that expense because you didin't ask for it anyway)

5. Know the best rate you can get fom your bank or credit union before hand. Only finance with them if they can beat your best rate.

Don't purchase the extended warranty, or credit life and health. Just more crap to get you screwed. (but if your insurance company doesn't offer GAP insurance, that might be necessary depending on how much you put down. If you put $5000.00 down.... skip the GAP, it probably won't help a bit)

Hope this helps someone keep from getting reamed by those nasty fucks.

yep the scammers always like to talk about "monthly payments" as opposes to the bottom line figures.

just save up and buy a 2-3 year old car in cash. no figures to manipulate that way.

Last year, my husband came back from Kwait. He has been wanting a Truck for years, but we couldn't afford it. So, I picked him up at the Airport and drove over to a Toyota Sales lot. He looked at me and I told him to pick out the Truck you want, and I will do the Negotiations? So, he did. We were inside talking to the Sales guy, and he asked me what I wanted out of the purchase? I said the following:

1. I want to drive this truck off the lot tonight

2. I don't want to put a single penny down on this truck

3. I want my payments under 300

4. I want an interest rate no higher than 4%

At the time 4% was good.

The Sales guy looked at me like I had two heads!!!
He said he had to talk to his BOSS and he would be right back. My husband looked at me and said, " There is no way he is going to give us what you just asked for?"

I told my husband, be patient and let me do my job. About 10 minutes later, the Sales guy came back and said he couldn't do it. I stood up and looked at him and said," I have a Credit Score over 850 and so does my husband, I told him if my business is not good enough, I will leave?" The Sales guy looked like he was going to cry. I stood up told my husband WE ARE LEAVING!!! About 5 minutes later the Sales guy yelled at us to come back. About 30 minutes later, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING HIS NEW TRUCK HOME!!!!!!

I GOT ALL FOUR THINGS THAT I WANTED. That is how you deal with a Sales guy!!!!

If you're going to buy a new car, do your shopping, figure out exactly what you want, then call around and negotiate your deal over the phone. (Easy to do since you won't be trading in a car.) Lock in the deal you want, which should be a very good one, then go, test drive the specific car and if it's OK, do that deal.

I bought my last car like that 6 years ago.
