YPF Repsol: Spain warns Argentina of strong response
The Spanish government has warned it will defend its interests as a row with Argentina over the nationalisation of oil company YPF intensifies.

The majority stake in YPF is owned by Spanish oil firm Repsol, whose shares fell by 8% in early trading in Madrid.

Promising a "clear and overwhelming" response, Spain summoned the Argentine ambassador to express its concern.

The nationalisation has alarmed foreign investors but is said to be popular among ordinary Argentines.

We should be watching this with more concern.

Populist leaders nationalizing companies and creating tensions / conflict in order to deflect blame on failed socialist policies.

That's how the last two world wars got started.

The economy of Argentina grew an astonishing 8.8% in 2011 (real growth, above the inflation).

I don't see how those are "failed" socialist policies.

I see VERY SUCCESSFUL policies here...

Do you realize how many governments control their oil?

Please, do a proper research and then come back.

Regarding the YPF issue, it has to be done, Repsol didn't invest anything in the last year, in fact, more than 100% of the profits were distributed to its shareholders, meaning, they were decapitalizing the company. In the meantime, Argentina had to import more oil than the produced, That's just stupid.

Oh and BTW, Repsol isn't even a spanish company, more than 50% of its shareholders belong to foreign interests.

Ever hear the phrase 'No where to go but up'? I don't know how to translate it into Portuguese. Latin America has been in the crapper for so long, it has no where to go but up. Even Brazil, which just surpassed the UK in the size of it's economy, should temper this achievement with the fact Brazil has 200 million people, the UK 65 million. That a small island nation of 65 million has an economy almost as large as a continental sized nation of 200 million tells you a lot. Like-wise, that the E.U. a conglomeration of many European nations, including powerhouses like Germany, France, the UK, were capable of creating an economy a little larger than one nation, the U.S., tells you a lot. That the U.S. single-handedly has an economy almost as large as the E.U. says a lot.

Why would they retaliate because a company that doesn't even have its majority of shareholders from Spain?

They're trying to act 'tough' in order to divert from their real problems. And besides, as I pointed out above, Repsol did the things wrong, that's why Argentiona had to make this decision. Oil is a strategic resource. They were decapitalizing YPF and worst, taking the money from profits to invest in other countries instead of Argentina. Yeah right, from a multinational company point of view that's perfectly logic, but it doesn't mean it would benefit our country.

Hello, you're a stupid brit, and probably live in your mom's basement.

As you see, talking shit is that easy. Obviously you know shit about this issue. But I'm gonna ilustrate you in order to avoid your own embarrassment.

In the last meeting with the head of Repsol, they said they had no money for investment in oil exploration in Argentina. How can it possibly be if they obtained 9 billions in profits?

That's the way a multinational company works, they only look for profit and in this case it meant that it wasn't 'profitable' to look for new oil resources in Argentina. It caused that Argentina had to import an stupidly huge amount of oil in 2011.

It's a perfectly reasonable decision. Repsol only cared about their own interests. At some point, it affected negatively our economy and future development. It had to be done and it's NOT new that a country takes posession of their own oil reserves. Brazil did the same, Norway, and of course the OPEC, and so many countries around the world.

Hello dipshit from a third world country: AKA Argentina

Still upset that that small island nation of 65 million 1/2 a world away came by, kicked ass on your entire nations armed forces, and bumped you off an island off your own coast?? A whole war and all you had to show for it was one sunk ship by a missile made by another European power. Pathetic.

Get over it loser.

Juan Carlos its too busy getting better from his hip which broke while he was HUNTING ELEPHANTS.

we should take all our natural resources back from the hands of foreign companies, its just that everytime that a latin american president tries this kind of shit he gets thrown out of office by military coups which are always financed by the U.S which is controlled by the federal reserve which is a private company own in its majority (70%) by european families.

am I right?
