You are typical of so many ppl who want a gun cuz its cool. When the shtf you will probably get you head blown off, by your own gun. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14530235 Yeah, you are SO wrong. I do NOT want a gun because it is cool in any way, shape or form! I knew eventually I would get one solely for protecting my family IF I ever had to. I had a break-in several years back and I NEVER felt safe again, but still refrained from having a gun in my home. I WILL shoot an intruder in my home this time. I have children to protect and all of this craziness in this world convinces me even more. Will it collect dust for years to come? I hope so! Thanks though for assuming I am an idiot who wants to "look cool." How idiotic. |

I will be keeping the actual gun in one locked location and the ammo in another. You're going to shoot the intruder, after you fumble around in the dark to make your way to the safe, so you can get your gun, load it with the ammo. BTW, you were dead 39 seconds ago |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1201535 04/27/2012 12:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You can buy a reliable revolver from Taurus that is heavy and accurate, .22 means no recoil, and a thousand rounds of ammo very cheap. Once you feel comfortable, trade it in for a heavy long barrel .38/.357 with a muzzle break built in. The .38 with compensator with regular loads is a good way to work up. It will shoot very softly, and as you get used to it, the ammo can be worked all the way up to the hottest .357 magnum load. From .22 to .357 mag can be used for home protection (personally, a .38 +p hollow point is an absolute minimum), just practice a bunch in a safe range and take a few classes so you don't shoot through your house and into a neighbors or kids bedroom. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11962294 ![]() 04/27/2012 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A gun is fine if you are trained on the workings and how to use it. The best defense for intruders is pepper spray. Not the pen type that so many think of. Buy bear spray that is intended for knocking a bear down so you can run. Once you knock your intruder down then run for the gun and call 911. |
<<FOCUS HARDER>> User ID: 660580 ![]() 04/27/2012 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a Ruger LCR - Lightweight Compact Revolver. Picture here - [link to www.tuckergunleatherblog.com] It's perfect for a novice because its just point and shoot. You don't have to worry about it jamming because it's a revolver. It comes in 357, which can shoot 357 mags and .38 special, and .38, which just shoots .38. Most handgun encounters happen between 3-10 feet so as long as you can point and pull the trigger, you will probably hit your target in the range. Good luck |
Teensi2 (OP) User ID: 8437259 ![]() 04/27/2012 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It sounds like it's not for home protection, so start off with a .22 revolver from Ruger/Smith and Wesson/Taurus. Oh I definitely will be going to the shooting range and classes before I even purchase. I am not taking this decision lightly. My main reason is home protection though. I don't think I am allowed to carry it anywhere in Chicago, am I wrong? |

I want them to know how it works, what it can do and how to use it. So they know what NOT to do also. I was raised around guns and I had a healthy respect for them. |
Resister User ID: 669410 ![]() 04/27/2012 12:58 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you want a gun, but don't have much if any experience, get one that is comfortable for to use and carry. If you aren't going to carry it then it will be uselessly sitting at home when you need it. If you are so afraid your kids will get it and shoot themselves or you with it because you never taught them better or instilled that sense of respect for weapons and are going to leave it locked up unloaded in a safe, then it will be uselessly sitting unloaded in a locked safe when an intruder breaks in and points the gun that he already has in his hand at you. If you want a gun, get a gun. If you aren't going to keep it loaded, with you, and ready to use, then get a pretty display case too so you can keep it with the rest of your collectible but useless nick nacks.
