Get a HiPoint 9mm. They're cheap, absolutly dependable, wont fire if you drop it in your panic, and is less than $200.00 new. Lifetime no questions asked full warranty.

Do NOT get this gun. I used to own one and it was fucking aweful. It won't fire if you drop it and it won't fire if you pull the trigger. It literally jammed up every other shot. There's a reason it's so cheap. You get what you pay for.

9mm, Taurus Pro Millennium....affordable, reliable, and compact. Everyone says that a compact is not good because you lose barrel length, therefore lose accuracy. I think thats bullshit though. Do you honestly think you are going to be shooting long range in or around your house? If the time arises when you do need to fire your gun(hopefully not)the intruder, burglar,or whomever will be more than likely close. I found that the 9mm compacts are a little more affordable than the regular 9mms. Hope this helps and good luck.

Definitely want one that will not fire if dropped!! Good point!!

OP, don't listen to the wanna-be 'gun experts' saying don't buy a Glock.

Glock is the #1 (in units sold) police, military, and law enforcement weapon sold in the WORLD. PERIOD.

Glock's also CAN NOT fire when dropped due to the passive safeties.

Springfield and CZ also make nice weapons, but for ease of use, reliability, accuracy, and price, it's hard to beat a Glock.

9mm using defense rounds (Hornady XTP or Speer Gold-Dot in 147gr) will provide plenty of 'punch' without providing plenty of recoil.

Go to a local gun range and rent some different types of guns. Ultimately, you have to like how it shoots and 'feels'.

Also, just about any gun can be outfitted with a laser. Most modern semi-autos (like the Glock) have a small accessory rail under the barrel to attach such things.

When buying consider: Reliability, reputation, recoil, safety record, price, and shooting 'comfort'.

Ignore idiots who say things like "Glocks r 4 noobs'.

I am surprisingly pleased at what I have learned today from all combined posts and appreciate them all. Because of the "majority" reports on Glocks, it will be on of the ones I consider. Thanks so much for that input!!

I am thinking between $200-$500 can get me an acceptable weapon yes?

You sure it wasn't the wally-world reloads your were shooting or you limp-wristing the shots?

I have 2 weapons (1 pistol in .40 and 1 carbine in 9mm) from HiPoint and they're both great (especially for the price).

If you had a HiPoint that jammed every other round, a quick return to the factory would of had a completely corrected weapon back to you in less than a week.

The HiPoints are on the heavy side, and they sure aren't pretty, but if you're on a tight budget, they're decent weapons. Neither of mine have ever experienced any FTF or FTE.

Yes.

Glock 19 or 26 (compact & subcompact, respectively) will run you about $475 - $550 depending on some minor options (like night sights).

Here's an example:

Springfield XD XDM (in 9mm) will run about $575 - $675

Here's an example:

[link to www.gunsamerica.com]

A nice CZ 75 or SP-01 Phantom will run you about $450-$500

Here's an example:

[link to www.gunsamerica.com]

It varies some state-to-state.

The HiPoint 9mm is very inexpensive (about $175 last I looked) and like I mentioned, is an overall good gun (just heavy and ugly). HiPoint does have a lifetime, no haggle warranty (they even fixed something I broke due to a fault of mine).

Irregardless, trying out as many as you can at the local range will give you the best feel for what you want.

Good luck and stay safe!

Re: Want to buy a gun/advice needed
I guess I was wrong, you do want it for home defense also. No carry in Chicago unless you are well connected BTW.

Buy a bedside safe that can be opened by your fingers (the kind that have the shape of a hand and you can push in your fingers in the right order) or a biometric safe. Make sure you have a good and bright flashlight, preferably mounted on the weapon.

Also have a solid and hidden safe where you can put it during the day if you will be the only user if you are so inclined. Also, if something bad happens, in Chicago showing all those safes and such will help a lot so that you don't go to jail for defending yourself (land of the free, home of the brave).

You MUST load it when it is in your bedside safe and you are home!! You can always leave a speed loader full for your revolver in the small safe and the gun in the "main" safe. This will separate ammo from gun while you are not home. Chicago PD and judges like that.

Get a good sized .357 that has a lot of weight to it. The light ones will probably not make you want to practice, which is a huge negative due to recoil. If recoil doesn't bother you, get a smaller one.

If you are in a condo or dense neighborhood, it is practically a requirement that you use frangible self-defense ammo. Cor-Bon is good for this. Practice with the cheap stuff, but put at least one box of your self defense round through the gun to get used to it and to pattern. More is better, but it can get expensive quickly!

Safety first.

Yes, you should clean it after every range outing.

Deep cleaning every 500-1000 rounds.

Look for something easy to dis-assemble (Glock field strips down in under 3 seconds) and maintain (Glock metal parts are coated with Tenifer technology and are hard enough to sharpen knives on - plus immune to rust).

I am going to purchase a handgun. Something small that I will put in a locked safe in my closet away from the kids. I do know how to shoot some but I am in no way an expert. Advice on where to even start?! I may go to the shooting range and ask questions but this place will give me a broader idea of what is a nice little handgun.

I can't obviously ask people in my immediate life.. They will freak!

Thanks for the advice, I am waiting on a call back from a local training facility. I know how to shoot, just want to be VERY secure in my choice of weapon and issues that are learned only from experience.

Re: Want to buy a gun/advice needed
Recoil depends on size of gun, bullet and materials its made of. Not too sure what recommend but my guess would be all metal gun..compact (beings as your comfortable w/ aim) 9mm w/home defence rounds(hollow point). The more rounds in the gun the heavier it will be.so like a 8 to 10rd clip should be fine.
 Quoting: Skyking264

I can definitely handle the weight I believe. I am thin at 5'7", but I am strong, not frail, and though I have small features, I don't think I need a "baby" gun.

I am just worried about the recoil and being comfortable with it, ya know? So I appreciate this post, as I feel I need to go with the heaviest I can handle that still fits into my hands!! Thanks!
 Quoting: Teensi2

Yea there is a pistol that shoots a shell like a shotgun. it can shoot slugs and pellets. I believe its called "The Judge" that thing is a beast. its small, all metal, not bad recoil. only 5 shots though..its a revolver. If weights not an issue id go with baretta 9mm w/hollow (hollow flattens out on impact to stop in the person/object)so good with not shooting through walls. Like i said i LOVE my all steel 40. Jericho 941.

Lol Great advice! I clean after about 500-1000 as well! Another reason for pistols with no hammer action is there is less moving parts which make the Glock n Ruger great to field strip and clean...less jamming probs as well! By the way most semi autos are centerfire...No dryfiring w/ Rrimshot pistols....as its bad for the gun.

If you want a gun, but don't have much if any experience, get one that is comfortable for to use and carry. If you aren't going to carry it then it will be uselessly sitting at home when you need it.

If you are so afraid your kids will get it and shoot themselves or you with it because you never taught them better or instilled that sense of respect for weapons and are going to leave it locked up unloaded in a safe, then it will be uselessly sitting unloaded in a locked safe when an intruder breaks in and points the gun that he already has in his hand at you.

If you want a gun, get a gun. If you aren't going to keep it loaded, with you, and ready to use, then get a pretty display case too so you can keep it with the rest of your collectible but useless nick nacks.

do NOT get a glock

>>>glocks are for stupid people<<<

(who know nothing about guns
or for impressionable youtube morons)

especially if this is your first gun

you also should NOT buy 'something small' as it might actually be more difficult and painful to shoot
until you are well trained

go to a store and feel different guns in your hand
9mm is probably your best bet for start

at the end of the day cz-75 is still the best value
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11519284

You obviously dont know much about Glocks. They are one of the most accuratge reliable(never jam) easy to maintain guns on the market. They also have a wide range of grip mods which will improve your hold of the gun and accuracy. 70% of all police in the U.S.A now carry them.

Apparently the majority of the police force in the U.S.A are stupid people. LOL
 Quoting: AAONMS 1282493

So what I am gathering is the lighter the gun, the more recoil? I want that gun to stay aimed at the target even after I shoot. If I miss first the shot, what's the point in the next one going over the head or into the ceiling..
I can handle a little recoil but I have seen people shoot and their arms recoil way back. That's not good enough control for me!
 Quoting: Teensi2

Actually the Beretta Nano and the Glock 26 have minimal recoil. They are both heavy built guns. Probably over built but thats why they are very high quality. The nano was actually built to be .40 caliber but they made it 9mm so its very solid.

The Ruger LC9, Glock 26 and Beretta Nano are all similar. Differences being the Ruger and Nano are smaller in size. The Nano and Glock are heavier and more solidly built and the Glock 26 and Nano have less recoil than the Ruger and the Glock and Nano are very reliable never jam pistols from much testing done.

When you add it up. The nano seems the best for you for size, recoil, accuracy, and reliability. But you need to test several guns out to see if you like the feel of one more than another, becaue that matters too.

There is no such thing as a safe gun. You are typical of so many ppl who want a gun cuz its cool. When the shtf you will probably get you head blown off, by your own gun.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14530235

Yeah, you are SO wrong. I do NOT want a gun because it is cool in any way, shape or form! I knew eventually I would get one solely for protecting my family IF I ever had to.

I had a break-in several years back and I NEVER felt safe again, but still refrained from having a gun in my home. I WILL shoot an intruder in my home this time. I have children to protect and all of this craziness in this world convinces me even more. Will it collect dust for years to come? I hope so!

Thanks though for assuming I am an idiot who wants to "look cool." How idiotic.
 Quoting: Teensi2

A locked up gun is likely to be of limited use for home defense. Revolver or shotgun 1st choice. The guy bad mouthing Hi-point must of been shooting bad ammo. My kids will go thru 500 rds of 9mm out of the hi-point carbine at a visit to the range, never seen it misfire.

Re: Want to buy a gun/advice needed
A locked up gun is likely to be of limited use for home defense. Revolver or shotgun 1st choice. The guy bad mouthing Hi-point must of been shooting bad ammo. My kids will go thru 500 rds of 9mm out of the hi-point carbine at a visit to the range, never seen it misfire.

I guess I have been hearing this a lot but I really felt that if it was in a safe next to my bed that I would be able to get to it quickly if I needed it. My concern for the children (which are old enough to NOT touch it) is immense.. I still have a 6 year old who may test the rules..

First of all, I am sorry that you are living in the Gulag that is Illinois, not Tennessee. Illinois firearm laws are so draconian and Feudalistic that my friends and I gave up deer hunting there. The people in Southern Illinois were terrific though and I miss them.

Listed below are four recommendations, in no particular order, for self defense handguns for beginners or old pro's. Take your pick, there is no wrong choice here. All are common calibers that are easy to shoot and maintain. Oh, and keep about two hundred rounds of ammo in reserve at all times.

Keep in mind the old adage "practice makes perfect" is more true in firearms handling than anything else. And don't worry, women with their excellent fine motor skills can shoot as good as men, be confident.

Also, for safety around the kiddies keep your chosen handgun loaded-round chambered-ready to fire in this installed safe.

glock 26. Nuff said.

Thanks, I will check that out. I will be keeping the actual gun in one locked location and the ammo in another. It terrifies me that my kids would ever even touch it, although at a certain age, I will show them how to use it and respect it. Ignorance can kill them.

For home protection, pump action shotgun. For a female, I would suggest a 20 gauge unless you feel comfortable with the recoil of a 12.

If a handgun, a good 9mm/40 is a good choice if you want semi auto. If you do not like the feel of those, then maybe a .380, but nothing smaller. I would definately suggest a revolver. Someone suggested a 4" 357 and would agree. This way you can practice with or hotload the .38's, and gradually move into the magnums.

The best thing to do, go to a range, rent a few different types, put a few clips through each and get a feel for what is good for you. Pick one from there, and practice, practice, practice. A well placed small caliber shot is better than missing with a .45

Good luck.

Re: Want to buy a gun/advice needed

Ignore people like that....

Questions...

- What is your budget? That will limit the recommendations that others can make.

-Are left-handed or right-handed? Which hand would you be utilizing to pull the trigger with? Some manufacturers do not make models for lefties. So that is somethhing to consider. Some manufacturers make right & left handed models of a particular gun, and some manufacturers designed guns with ambidextrous features (slide release, magazine release, etc)

-Is the expense of ammo a concern for you? How frequently do you plan on going to the range to practice?

Good idea about the safe. I live alone with a dog but always utilize my safe. One thing you may want to consider is a biometric safe that could only be opened with your finger print. That would allow you quicker access in the event of an emergency, rather than fumbling around in the dark trying to get into your safe.

FYI concerning the Glock 26 recommendations. Just note that this 'Baby Glock' is a subcompact. It's got a very small grip. I have small hands for a guy and I had to install a pinky grip to get it to fit more comfortably in my hands. Shoots 9mm, which isn't expected to have a lot of stopping power. Not my only piece though. If you are only planning on making one purchase, and want something a little bit beefier (both in size and stopping power), consider other options. Glock 26 run you about $450-550 depending on where you live. I think there are some other good options in that price range. Don't get me wrong though, nothing bad about that model. A lot of people prefer it for purposes of concealed carry, but that won't be your concern.

Re: Want to buy a gun/advice needed

Well alrighty than! lol Thank you for being a straight shooter!

I live in Chicago: "49 states have passed laws allowing citizens to carry certain concealed firearms in public, either without a permit or after obtaining a permit from local government and/or law enforcement.[1] Illinois is the only state without such a provision."

I need a FOID registration to transport it and own it, but cannot carry it in this state.
