Portuguese opening in chess : killer surprise
Video:

[link to en.chessok.net]

"Portuguese opening is a very extravagant debut that may be used in serious games. The lesson is led by IM Andrew Martin. It is difficult for Black to get the parity in this debut, according to Martin. 1.e4 e5 2.Bb5!. By the way, this debut has some ideas similar to the ones of Trompovsky Attack."

Re: Portuguese opening in chess : killer surprise
It's funny you mention this opening, I was taught a counter to this "portuguese" opening in 8th grade.

e4..e5..
Bb5..Kc6

And then as long as white doesn't do anything drastic

Black's 3rd move is
Kd4

Now the trap is set. From this position, you are protected by the pawn, attacking the bishop. Bishop retreats.
Black plays Queen to F6, setting up a mate, and also many smothered mates as well.

In fact, I won a tournment against someone in the 90's, probably 95, against someone who played white and played e4, I played e5, he played Bishop to B5 and I played my Knight exchange.

Basically this entire opening for white only works if black attacks with the pawn, but as I said I don't do that. I would destroy you in a game of chess if you somehow think this is a portuguese opening that's never been heard of here before. As I said, I was playing against and beating this move in the mid 90's.

I guess what I am saying is, this entire line of attack is based on black playing Pawn to C6 for its second move. Which, as I said, I never do.

Re: Portuguese opening in chess : killer surprise
You want a really strong, unforeseen, seldom used move that will incite terror into your opponent?

e4..e5
d4 (it's a sacrifice).

I've won thousands of games against people with this opening. After white takes pawn (which happens 90% of the time), I attack with a standard Ruy Lopez bishop/knight attack and completely ignore that pawn until later in the game. If you played against me you would see what I mean, but don't take my word for it, Try it!

This is a GOOD opening acording to IM Andrew Martin.

Its not played more often not because of unsoundness but more because of lack of publicity.

Well if my opponent didn't know the Alekhine variation I usually could force at least a draw. Had some good wins with it. I usaully played the Petroff or Caro-Kahn with black though. Nimzo-Indian against QP openings.

This is a opening as good (or even better) as most popular e4e5 openings.

I dont see any reason why its not played regularly by top players.

I use it all the time in internet play with very good results.

Its a good, sound opening. Period.

I had a look at the opening system and find to be of novel interest for white... while I do not like to respond 2...e5 as black (not ever), I am would like to explore this system further and accept your challenge with this continuation...

Yeah, I've been rated over 2000 for a long time.
I first encountered this opening ten years ago.
White isn't committing any crime with 2. Bb5 so sure, it's playable. But it's nothing for Black to fear in my opinion - he can do anything he wants in response. I personally like 2....c6. I saw a brilliant miniature with this in which the grandmaster played the black pieces aggressively, got a huge lead in development and crushed in about 15 moves.

I think there's also a "Portuguese" line in the Center Counter but I've forgotten.

That is the Ruy Lopez opening and has been around since the 1600's. Some also say it is the Max Lange attack.

All Chess players who are serious get R.F. Green's book On Chess which has been around for over 200 years now and has all the traditional openings and their counters.

The video says this comes from the Scandinavian Accepted line, but it does kind of resemble the Ruy Lopez, so good call AC
