Granted this isn't so in every case, but having worked with challenged individuals over the years, often it is. |

We now get to hear dumb ass people talk about the way people breathe. Congrats, you just proved evolution isn't true. Breathing out of your mouth... Holy fuck people have really gone fucking retarded. |

Right, I understand sinus issues can require breathing through the mouth, but why when mentally impaired? For instance all of those with downs syndrome breathe through their mouths. Most obviously "slow" people also walk around with their mouths hanging open. I'm curious if the act of breathing through ones nose actually effects brain function...there are a lot of environmental sensors in our nose/nasal passages. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8299431 Breathing out of your mouth... Wow. This might be the stupidest thing I have ever heard a human being say. Its definitely up there. Explain yourself. It's a fact that mentally impaired people breathe through their mouths instead of their noses. |

Are you telling me you've never noticed this? |

They breath short and shallow through their nose. Eastern folks breath deep and slow into their stomach and exhale slowly. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3115472 I believe that breathing, and especially through the nose, has a profound effect on people. Definitely worth researching and understanding |

Wiki is saying: Mouth breathing in children can be a cause of abnormal facial growth primarily in the upper and lower jaw shape, leading to Long Face Syndrome or other malocclusions.[1] So its scientificaly acknowledged |

One reason, children with Downs Syndrome often have issues with skull formation causing nasal blockage and they often have a cleft plate. |

Michael Jackson of course comes to mind... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 12807134 United States 05/04/2012 04:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good thread OP. From years of meditation I've learned your breaths should be equal. Also if you pay attention to your breathing it will calm you down. If my children would get hurt or upset I noticed they held their breath. I would always tell them breath equal times in and out. It's amazing how fast that would calm them down 5* from me |

NEC99 (OP) User ID: 875403 United States 05/04/2012 04:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's something on the nose & pheromone receptors; Which receptors bind pheromones in the nose? There is heavy evidence that the vomeronasal organ (also called Jacobson’s organ) acts as the pheromone receptor. It is a little sense organ (part of the "sixth sense") just beside the cartilage of the nasal septum and just beside the olfactory nerve. It is only stimulated by pheromones and not by odours, while the olfactory nerve is only stimulated by odours and not by pheromones. [link to med-vetacupuncture.org] |

The lungs are a primary source of our energy level. They extract oxygen from the air we breathe primarily on the exhale. Because the nostrils are smaller then the mouth, air exhaled through the nose creates back pressure when one exhales. It slows the air escape so the lungs have more time to extract oxygen from them. When there is proper oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange, the blood will maintain a balanced pH. If carbon dioxide is lost too quickly, as in mouth breathing, oxygen absorption is decreased." Overbites cause it too. They make the mouth difficult to close properly, at least not without thinking about it. In the States, that's a mark of low income, of course, since orthodontists cost so much. I think only those on Indian Health Service get that free, regardless of income. Just a warning, though: anything breathed through the nose goes straight to the brain, so if you find yourself someplace with a possible airborne pathogen, tie a bandana around your mouth and breathe through the mouth till you can get out of there. Do the same if you use bone meal in your garden. One sniff and you're fucked: it's made from 'downer' cattle. |
