Mouth breathers! Serious question, why do the mentally impaired breathe through their mouths?

One star? For what? I'm not trying to insult or offend anyone, this is a real symptom of ones ability to think and express themselves coherently.

Surely others have noticed this strange phenomena?

Sometimes it's because of sinus impairment/blockages...hard to breath from one's nose when it's plugged.
Granted this isn't so in every case, but having worked with challenged individuals over the years, often it is.

Like you never breathe through your mouth.

Right, I understand sinus issues can require breathing through the mouth, but why when mentally impaired? For instance all of those with downs syndrome breathe through their mouths.
Most obviously "slow" people also walk around with their mouths hanging open.
I'm curious if the act of breathing through ones nose actually effects brain function...there are a lot of environmental sensors in our nose/nasal passages.

It's a fact that mentally impaired people breathe through their mouths instead of their noses.

Of course I breathe through my mouth on occasion, but I don't go through life with my mouth hanging open.

In the west people don't breath right and pay dearly for it psychologically. They breath short and shallow through their nose. Eastern folks breath deep and slow into their stomach and exhale slowly.

A lot of mentally impaired people are mentally impaired due to not being put together right in the womb. The mental impairment isn't the cause it's just another effect.

One reason, children with Downs Syndrome often have issues with skull formation causing nasal blockage and they often have a cleft plate.

That's bizarre, I never would have even considered that.

I might be taking this too far, but I read a few years back, pheromone receptors in the nose/nasal passage can effect even sexual orientation, and that extreme nose jobs can profoundly effect your sexuality. Michael Jackson of course comes to mind...

From years of meditation I've learned your breaths should be equal.
Also if you pay attention to your breathing it will calm you down.
If my children would get hurt or upset I noticed they held their breath. I would always tell them breath equal times in and out.

Overbites cause it too. They make the mouth difficult to close properly, at least not without thinking about it. In the States, that's a mark of low income, of course, since orthodontists cost so much. I think only those on Indian Health Service get that free, regardless of income.

Just a warning, though: anything breathed through the nose goes straight to the brain, so if you find yourself someplace with a possible airborne pathogen, tie a bandana around your mouth and breathe through the mouth till you can get out of there. Do the same if you use bone meal in your garden. One sniff and you're fucked: it's made from 'downer' cattle.
