So how did I see it very high and bright in the NIGHT sky at 11 o'clock PM last night?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15661626

You're sure that was Venus?
I couldn't see it due to cloudy sky last night.

It was the bright thing in the sky that people are saying it is Venus. It was so bright and big that I was able to see it through some clouds.

Venus is moving significantly faster than Earth. It does a full orbit in 7 months.

 Quoting: CleverMoniker 15254278

And Venus has been visible for more than 7 months...
I can't wait til June 5th.
 Quoting: Ghost375

If Venus is what we are seeing in the night sky (getting bigger every night) then how is it supposed to move so far in a month that it will pass in front of the sun, when at the moment it is on the opposite side?
 Quoting: Conspiracynut1

Because it can happen like really fast.

It's not even on the opposite side, when do you see venus? probably early in the evening.

This will get earlier and earlier untill you don't see it at all, this is the moment when it's getting really close to the sun.

Also, this will mean we will see less and less of venus when talking about brightness, because it's going to work the same way as the moon's 'seasons'. Where venus is a crescent now, it will become thinner and thinner each passing day.

Trust me, it's venus, and it isn't weird.

If you knew how the universe worked, how orbits look like from a body that orbits a point that the other body orbits as well, you would understand.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 281126

Then why do I see "Venus" at its biggest and brightest (west) from 9.30pm to Midnight??..and NO its not jupiter, saturn or mars or the frikin moon..AND this has been going on for a very long time..I watch it all the time, every night because I can see it laying on my bed looking out my window. wtf
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 788508

Because of the angle from the earth to the sun. This will get smaller and smaller. This in turn means venus will get lower and lower to the horizon every day, and set sooner and sooner. Till you wont see it at all. give it a week or two. It will get really fast soon.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 281126

okey dokey..I'll take ya up on that, I'll report back after a week, mabey then as you say, it will finally go away after over a year of it being super bright and big..you know, mabey its because "venus" is going thru some sort of internal changes?, getting hotter?, perhaps getting ready for a skin change? rotation change?..something?

Venus is moving significantly faster than Earth. It does a full orbit in 7 months.

If you picture the solar system as a clock face, with the sun at the middle, and earth at the 6pm position, Venus is at the 6:45 position, between us and the sun. Venus has essentially been coming towards us for the past 3-4 months, it's basically chasing us around the sun, until it finally catches up, crosses the sun, and then starts to lead us around the sun, at which point it will cease to be in the western sky at sunset, and instead will be in the eastern sky before sunrise.

Here is a good visual reference:

indeed, it is Venus , but 20..30yrs ago it was not that bright...

and since its surface (and composition) remained the same, it reflects more light because the sun is more bright than 20yrs ago.. don't you think so?

If it is not that far from the sun how does it appear in the NIGHT sky (not evening or morning) and so high?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15661626

It's 35 degrees from the sun at the moment. As it gets closer to the sun every day, it will appear to accelerate its approach to the sun because it's getting closer to earth and therefore the apparent motion is increasing. Seriously, get stellarium and celestia, a picture is worth a thousand words and it sounds like you could learn a lot by studying how it looks and moves in 3 dimensions and over time til the transit in June.

I tried once again to get a focused shot of 'the big bright star' aka Venus/Nibiru/whatever but it seems to be spinning/rolling? Is this right? Should it be? I can focus on the moon easily but can't for the life of me get a good pic of this. This is as good as I could get last night

It's cool how V. rotates so quickly around Sun, Earth also does, yet for the last 5-7 mths the "V" is still showing around same time in the same sky sector without having moved much. Even the Orion moved a bit since, but not V. look the same way and you see it, just brighter/closer. Also, it is still at the same location and azimuth where "it" was during the smiley-face conjunction of V, J and moon years ago. What's the trick here?
