Cars running at 70 mpg BANNED in the US by Fed Gvmt | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 5546541 Hungary 05/09/2012 12:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In most of the world outside of the US, people have for a long time, driven much smaller engined cars quite happily. They have long been used to much better fuel economy because of this. Because of high fuel taxes in places like Europe and Japan there has been a massive pressure on manufacturers to really invest in research and making the most efficient engines possible. Meanwhile, in the good old USA, low fuel taxes and a generally higher level of disposable income over the decades since World War 2 have led people to demand big engined big vehicles. The manufacturers got lazy as there was no incentive to be efficient, and people had stupid expectations about engine and vehicle size. Fast-forward to the present day. The US now faces higher and higher base energy costs, and many Americans have less spending power, so even American manufacturers are at last trying to be efficient. The problem is that, as the guy in the video pointed out, the vast American infrastructure of highways is paid for by fuel tax. But fuel tax in the US is actually extremely low compared to much of the world. So the US government can do one of two things: 1. Drastically increase fuel tax and encourage people to get efficient vehicles - thus the tax income stays enough to maintain the highways and people can have efficient cars. But, most of the vehicles in America will still be older 'legacy' vehicles with appalling fuel efficiency. The owners of these will be crippled by higher fuel taxes and will be very angry. That will be a lot of angry voters. 2. Keep fuel tax low and keep fuel efficient vehicles off the road for as long as possible, so that the vast numbers of Americans with older inefficient vehicles are protected, as is the revenue to maintain the highways. Tough problem, but one entirely of America's own making I'm afraid. This is what happens when one nation lives it large and ignores progress. |

They dont care about mileage. They only care about profits and keeping their buddies well fed, and since we use 1/4 of the worlds oil supply its not too hard to figure out. VW has developed a 2 seater diesel turbo that is coming to market (not USA) next year that gets around 250 MPG. To put that into perspective you could drive from NYC to LA for about $40 in fuel. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 10153246 United States 05/09/2012 12:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bear in mind, the gallons are different in the US compared to UK and everywhere else. 1 Imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallons. That will account for some of the difference. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7965691 Also, the USA models have 2.0 litre "clean diesel" engines, european have 1.6 litre "bluemotion". Besides fuel efficiency, the other difference is power. American cars always have torqy, more powerful motors because that's what sells. People would get into a typical 1.2 litre european car and compare it to a 2.4 litre USA car and say the other one sucked. Americans don't mind burning gas and will buy bigger motors, hence why everyone still drives big SUVs. In Europe, everyone drives tiny cars. I'd say it's not a government conspiracy, but just marketing. If all people started buying only fuel efficient cars in USA, gas taxes would go up to pay for the roads - just like it is in Europe. So, no conspiracy, just simple economics and marketing. duh on the imperial gallons.. we have already accounted for that. and go to a vw dealership.. they will flat out tell you they wish they could see the 75 mpg(hwy) US gallons vehicles. do you know how many people who would give up power for that kind of mileage? |

Exactly. But no one can tell me we don't have the technology to do better than we are. In any case, we never went to war over electricity. |
