ALERT: Chinese media now warning of war in South China Sea (Spratlys)
China warned its citizens in the Philippines to "stay indoors" on Thursday as its state media warned of war over a month-long dispute in the South China Sea. Territorial rivalry has escalated throughout the seas around China as regional and international navies seek to establish rights of passage against an expanding Chinese presence.

Also, bloggers are reporting that China has escalated its combat alter readiness from Level 4 up to Level 2, meaning that a conflict could be near, but the PLA have of course denied that.

Meanwhile, news reports are talking about a deeper US-Philippines military alliance.

And even India has dispatched naval ships to the South China Sea:

Philippines says US to protect it in South China Sea

MANILA: The Philippines said Wednesday the United States had pledged to protect it from attacks in the South China Sea, a day after China issued a warning over a territorial row in the waters.

Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said he had received the assurances during talks in Washington last week in which the Philippines’ increasingly tense dispute with China over rival claims to a shoal in the sea were discussed.

Gazmin said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defence Secretary Leon Panetta stressed they were not taking sides in the dispute, but they assured the Philippines the United States would honour a 1951 mutual defence treaty. “It includes armed attack (on) island territories in the Pacific (region),” Gazmin said, citing conditions for the allies coming to each other’s aid.

While a possible war with Iran is in all the headlines, this one is quietly heating up into potential military conflict between the US and China.
