Astromut Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 14554787 United States 05/24/2012 08:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The "skyview team" are thieving liars. They steal images and video from real amateur astronomers and claim those images show "planet x" when they do not. They took down their old videos because I tracked down the true sources of some of the images and informed the people who had been stolen from. They took down their videos before they could be reported for copyright violations. Their latest video ( [link to www.youtube.com] ) is actually of the Black Eye Galaxy, M64. The shitty processing they do to the video distorted the image a bit, but you can still easily tell it's M64. Here's an overlay: [link to i319.photobucket.com] I pointed this out in the comments section, lo and behold, they then disabled the comments for the video. They're pathologically dishonest, they probably stole their latest video from Night Skies Network, which is where they also stole some of their earlier footage. Thanks to TBar for presenting the information: My very first "bust" on the Skyview team: Skyview = Someone Kidnapped Your Valuable Images Expecting Worship |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16582627 In the middle of the first video with the "double sunset" how does a planet behind Neptune look that big? And how did they manage to take a picture December 16th 2012? I do not know of a solid answer to your first query, I thought that odd as well, there are many pics and vids of an object obviously close enough to see with the naked eye and this one is not. I believe that pic was taken in 2011. |

I don't always agree with TBar and he can be a pompous ass at times but he is none the less very intelligent. Two respected opinions are definitely enough to have me questioning this. |

Interesting... Yes. They've been caught stealing multiple images from multiple people in multiple videos. It seems to be their MO. I strongly suspect they're still milking Night Skies Network for video footage they can use and make false claims about. [link to www.nightskiesnetwork.com] It's a gold mine for thieves; there's no recordings of past shows, so unless someone records their images on their own and posts them (there's a completely separate forum where most of us broadcasters hang out and share images), there's no evidence available to catch thieves. That is how I caught them before, stealing from Smiling Chicken Observatory who had broadcast on NSN. I'm going to start putting some "cheese" in a trap for these guys, if you catch my meaning (I have a broadcast account on NSN under a completely different name)... Hopefully they'll come try to steal it. |

What is the pay off? You have a level of dedication not often seen. If these things really are fake, then why the attention? Do you often inform drunks the purple elephant isn't real? Those are real questions, not being sarcastically insulting. |

Do you often inform drunks the purple elephant isn't real? Those are real questions, not being sarcastically insulting. People who steal images from fellow amateur astronomers and then make false claims about them really, really, really piss me off. It's a huuuge pet peeve for me. Usually I just find debunking an enjoyable exercise in investigation and analysis, but when it comes to image theft it takes on a whole new level for me, especially when it's from people I know and hang out with (even if only in an online setting). |
