Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
@ Awakened, thank you for a very kind and encouraging post and God bless you too.

@ Charlie, I want to talk about carrots. I live more than a hundred miles from a health food store, natural co-op or anything similar. The only 'organic' carrots I can get closer are at the groceries in Spingerville, AZ (I'm in the wilds of Catron County, NM) and those only came in 2-pound packs. Here was my surprise: I put two pounds in my juicer (just a basket type, because my Champion got stolen a decade ago) and got no more juice than an 8 oz jam jar would hold! I remember years ago, when I'd go on a juice fast, I got that much juice with just one pound of carrots and with a juicer no better that what I have now! Have you noticed any difference in the carrots in your own area?

I don't have any melon this month, let alone kiwi and shall have to wait till next but your dressing sounds lovely. So, let's improvise: how about a spoonful of raw tahini, a handful of raisins, a piece of onion and a dash of lemon juice in the blender, mixed with that carrot juice? I might also add a pinch of cinnamon and clove as these are good for you.

Carrots that have been GMO'd need less water to grow and therefore have less water/juice in them. It's like a faded copy from a copying machine.

What a depressing thought! I bought my carrots at Safeway and the pack said 'organic.' Are some of these, sold in major groceries, also GMO's?
hiding

I didn't know they needed less water! These 'organics' weren't very big either, not like those big fat ones that one sees in the 25 lb. bags of carrots found at health stores.
Since Springerville is a little bitty town, I'm wondering if maybe they just weren't very fresh. Small towns get discriminated against when it comes to produce, especially if they are not on major interstate highways. If you look at Hwy 60 on a map, you'll see there's not much on it of any size, till you get to Socorro going east or Show Low going west.

Good luck in your venture OP. I think I will be doing the same in a few months but I can never go 100% raw, I think I can do 70/30% though. If you want to include meat have you thought of getting a dehydrator? Best beef/pork/chicken jerky you will EVER have. And very easy.

Thanks Heebygeebies! Even at 70% raw you'll feel much betterhf
I'll be doing 100% raw, I do own the excalibur dehydrator and will be making flax crackers, nut burgers etc. when I have enough time on my hands.

Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
Last night after eating a chili cheese dog and onion rings I found myself regretting the GMO effect. Now mind you I knew better, I used to be an avid juicer and raw foodist but fell off the raw food wagon and proceeded to embalm my temple with unhealthy, chemical ridden food if you can call it that. So last night I picked up some hemp protein, vibrant greens, blackberries, strawberries and ripe watermelon from a local farmer.

God willing I plan to post on GLP everyday for 30 days. I challenge everyone to make changes in your diet even if they are subtle ones, your body, mind and spirit will thank you!

Before Breakfast: Brushed teeth with aluminum free baking soda and did an coconut oil pulling for 15 mins.

DAY 1

Breakfast:

1 scoop of hemp protein
2 tablespoons Navitas Superfood Blend
2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds
1 scoop of Vibrant Health Green Vibrance Greens.
6 Blackberries
6 Strawberries

Blended in 16 ounces of purified, reverse osmosis water.
Enjoyed the feeling of nutrition penetrating my cells!

Snack: Watermelon

Heading to the store for some dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds!

Have a wonderfully blessed day and here's to your health!!!!
 Quoting: Awakened In Christ

Dear Awakened- Would you please explain a 'coconut pulling'? I love using coconut oil as a moisturizer; it's very light, wonderful scent and I just love the organics.
Thanks- CH

Hi CH! I have a thread on oil pulling, but I will give you an intro here hf
Recently I came across an article relating to "Oil Pulling", and it's amazing benefits!
[link to www.earthclinic.com]

INTRODUCTION

Oil Pulling ("OP") is reported to cure: Mouth & Gum Disease; Stiff Joints; Allergies; Asthma; High Blood Sugar; Constipation; Migraines; Bronchitis; Eczema; Heart, Kidney, Lung Diseases; Leukemia; Arthritis; Meningitis; Insomnia; Menopause (hormonal issues); Cancer; AIDS; Chronic Infections; Varicose Veins; High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Polio; Cracked Heels.

Here's are a few paragraphs from Bharat Savur's article on The Hindu Business Online

..."When Dr Karsch examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It's poisonous, so never swallow it, he warns. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases. Apparently, Dr Karsach cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis.

The first sign of improvement is in the teeth-they become firm and white, he says. Other healing indications: fresh, relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, anew appetite and energy, better memory and deep sleep.

Dr Karsch swears by the mouth oil-wash for anything from organ-disorders, skin-diseases, menstrual problems, paralysis to every ache and it is in the human anatomy. You can gargle even when you have fever, he says, adding, it takes anything from two days to a year to cure a disease.

And if these claims sound exaggerated, he told a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists, try out the process yourself.

Oil Pulling Instructions:

Swish1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes to remove toxins from your body!

Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
Benefits of a raw food diethf

[link to www.all4naturalhealth.com]

How is eating raw food good for health? Is really as beneficial as widely said to be?

Better nutritional content

Fruits, vegetables and plant foods are packed with nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and other health-promoting phytochemicals. Heating, however, destroys a fair bit of them.

Vitamins are destroyed, proteins are structurally spoilt, and minerals are converted from their organic and absorbable state to a state whereby they are not easily assimilated by the body.

Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins B and C, also get leached out of foods during the cooking process.

Naturally, raw food is thus more nutritious than its cooked counterparts.

Dr Ann Wigmore, one of the most well-known proponents of raw diets, even suggests that over 80% of the nutrition in food is destroyed via cooking!

It is often believed that foods which grow in the wild are the most nutritious.

Life-giving and health-promoting enzymes, too

Raw foods contain high levels of enzymes, which assist in digestive processes as well as contribute to good health in other ways.

By eating raw foods, we reduce the need for the body to produce its own digestive enzymes. This frees up energy which the body can then use to carry out other important work, such as healing, cell repair and rejuvenation, fighting off foreign invaders, etc.

More enzymes would also be available for various uses by the body, including healing and the regulation of metabolic processes in the body.

On the other hand, since enzymes are killed by heat, cooked food is virtually devoid of them. The consumption of a largely cooked diet thus hampers digestive processes in the body, causing the production of excessive amounts of toxic by-products.

Excess energy usage, poor digestion and excessive toxin production - these are the reasons why we often feel tired, sluggish, and lethargic after a heavy meal of cooked food, while we would feel light and energetic after having a salad and a glass of fresh juice.

Further, the pancreas is overworked to produce the additional enzymes the body needs, enzymes which could have been obtained from raw foods. This contributes to long-term degenerative conditions.
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is
honorable, whatever, is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, If there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
You don't need to eat like a gerbil. You can have delicious meals made of raw food with very little cooking.

For instance, I follow a "flavor per calorie" diet. As you notice the chemical foods have very little actual flavor.

Breads, pasta, none of that in my diet. For my lunch today I am having:

Sun dried tomato slices,
a chunk of Vermont white cheddar cheese,
three slices of salami,
and a chocolate bar (90% chocolate, second ingredient being cane sugar)

For dinner I am having:

Field green salad with a sprinkling of sausage for flavor,
a quarter of a small rotisserie chicken with whipped avocado.

Kick ass, right?

Instead of sour cream I use greek yogurt with a squeeze of lemon.
 Quoting: Charlie the Choo-Choo

Isn't the salami and sausage full of nasty nitrates though? Bleh. and the rotisserie chicken...gross.

Isn't the salami and sausage full of nasty nitrates though? Bleh. and the rotisserie chicken...gross.

I eat the meat, but I respect the animal.

Oh and don't forget your chickpeas!!! Hummus is SO flipping easy to make and tastes amazing with any veggie. If you don't know any good hummus recipes let me know and I will share mine.

Yes!! I make sprouted hummus! I sprout my garbanzo beans and make my tahini with organic sesame seeds! Delish! hugs
 Quoting: Awakened In Christ

How do you make sprouted hummus? Do you soak and sprout the beans, just like you do any other sprouting seed, and then grind them up raw? How big do you let the sprouts get before you use them?
 Quoting: Sweetshrub

Hi Sweet!hf here's the recipe:

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups dry garbanzo beans
2 tablespoons tahini
1 teaspoon sea salt
2 lemons, juiced
4 cloves garlic, crushed or to taste
1 cup filtered or spring water
1 pinch paprika
Directions

Soak the beans for 24 hours. Drain, and let sit for 2 to 3 days, until the bean's sprouts are about 1/2 inch long. Rinse the beans once or twice a day.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Remove from heat, and let stand for 1 minute. Place the sprouted beans in the hot water, and let sit for 1 minute. Drain. If you do not do this step, the hummus will be awful.
Place the sprouted beans into the container of a large food processor. Add the tahini, sea salt, lemon juice, and garlic. Process until smooth, adding water if necessary. It will take 3 to 5 minutes to blend. Let sit in the food processor for 5 minutes to allow the beans to absorb as much of the water as possible. If too thick, add more water, and blend again. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Spoon into a serving dish, and garnish with paprika.

And a quick question. Do any of you implement a period of fasting in your diet? Also, what are your thoughts on carbohydrate intake on this diet, and fat intake? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I
Most importantly OP, how do you feel since you have gone raw?

Hey AC!

No fasting is needed as you will detox on this diethf
When you eat raw, carbs and fat aren't an issue. You will lose weight, detox and be healthier for it!

So far I feel ok! I feel cleaner and haven't lost my energy which is a plus!

Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
@ Awakened,
I have a dumb question. When the sprouts are that big and ready to use, do the hulls come off when you rinse them or is the 'bean' part still attached? I have never sprouted garbanzos, only ground them dried into flour or cooked them whole. I've sprouted a lot of beans but usually the sprout came loose alone, as in the case with mung beans.

I take it the step with the hot water is to get rid of a film covering them, that has a bitter taste? You said they'd be awful otherwise. Did you ever do the 'otherwise?' What happened?

Re: Raw Food 30 Day Challenge
Good evening fellow glpers and health nutshf

Today is day three of my raw food journey! The diet has been easy to stick to because it's so tasty and you can't get that taste in GMO foods. I'm also
noticing that the smell of cooked GMO foods nauseates me and my desire to cheat has diminished!

I did experience some slight detox symptoms today. I had a headache most of the day and had fever for a couple of hours as well. This too will pass!

My hope is that your journey to healthier eating is going smoothly and bringing you pleasure! hf

Day 3

Breakfast:

Grapefruit
Berry chocolate smoothie
Almond milk

Lunch :

Guacamole
Bowl of cherries

Snack:
Apricot

Dinner:
Kale salad with mixed raw nuts

Be healthy friends!

No questions are dumb Sweet! What's wonderful about sprouting beans is theres no hulls to have deal withhf.

Blanching them softens them, making a creamy hummus! I have sprouted them without blanching them, it just made a Crunchier hummus hf

Here's to your health Sweetcheer
