Authorities have filed charges against a Harrisburg police officer who shot his wife in the buttocks during a weekend gathering at his home.
Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said Officer William Owens had been drinking alcohol with family and friends before the shooting early Saturday at his home in the 1400 block of Wayne Street, and then lied about how the incident occurred.
Owens, 44, was seated at a patio table when one of his brothers asked him if his duty firearm had a safety. Owens responded that the gun had no safety, and demonstrated by firing four to five shots into the air, according to charging documents obtained by abc27 News.
He then placed the .45 caliber handgun to his side, racked the slide mechanism, and fired the gun because he "thought it was empty," the court papers state.
