Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 17287188 ![]() 06/03/2012 04:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Large tornado outbreak hits U.S. East Coast – 9 tornadoes reported Posted on June 3, 2012 June 3, 2012 – MARYLAND – High winds, heavy rains and at least 9 tornadoes have descended on the mid-Atlantic region, causing at least one serious injury but no deaths and damaging homes, businesses and boats, officials said on Saturday. The violent storms that struck Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia on Friday collapsed a fabric dome near Pittsburgh, stranded motorists on flooded roads, and ruined homes and boats. The National Weather Service said in a post on Twitter late on Saturday that six tornadoes had been confirmed as part of the weather outbreak. No other details were immediately available. One man in Bel Air, Maryland, near Baltimore suffered broken bones when the concrete block wall of his automotive garage business collapsed on him during the storm. Another man inside the garage had minor injuries, Edward Hopkins of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency said. An alert employee evacuated 11 others from the fabric golf dome at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania a minute before winds caused it to collapse on Friday. They escaped unhurt, the university said in a statement. Tens of thousands of people lost power in Washington and its Maryland suburbs on Friday, but outages were down to around 250 customers by Saturday, said Myra Oppel, a spokeswoman for Potomac Electric Power Company.”It was really nasty weather,” Oppel said in a telephone interview. “I’ve never heard so many tornado warnings.” Baltimore Gas and Electric Company also had tens of thousands of customers lose power, though all but roughly 2,500 customers had their power restored, the company said on its website. Flash flooding along the Interstate 95 corridor inundated roads and stranded motorists, some of whom had to be rescued, said Howard Silverman of the National Weather Service in Maryland. Experts were out determining whether tornadoes had caused the damage, Silverman said. “There are trees on roofs, and tarps, it’s really a mess,” McCormick said. Boats in a parking lot were tossed off their trailers, she said. Residents were being kept out of two hard-hit neighborhoods where crews were replacing downed power poles and clearing debris that blocked roads. [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

no one 35 User ID: 11092695 ![]() 06/03/2012 04:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live in KC and am a flight attendant. I was working a flt out of DCA on Fri afternoon that eventually canceled. Passengers were irate and just couldn't understand why we weren't taking off. I wish I had that footage to show them. I fly for a living and would NEVER want to be in the air with that kind of weather. Those type of storms have the kind of wind sheer that crashes planes. Anonymous Coward User ID: 17343928 ![]() 06/04/2012 08:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Severe storms rumble from Missouri to Florida... After thunderstorms lit up from Oklahoma to Tennessee to round out the weekend, severe storms will rumble across the Southeast today and tonight. Senior Meteorologist John Kocet warned for impending severe weather across the Southeast on Sunday. Places from Cape Girardeau, Mo., to Nashville, Tenn., to Birmingham, Ala., to Atlanta, Ga., to Jacksonville, Fla., will need to be on alert for damaging thunderstorms. A frontal boundary draped across the Southeast will provide the spark for severe thunderstorms. Cool air from the north will clash with warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, creating a battle zone for thunderstorms to thrive. Multiple rounds of storms will fire along this boundary. Thunderstorms will track across Tennessee, northern Alabama, northern Georgia and southern South Carolina this morning, bringing torrential downpours, gusty winds and some hail. This cluster of storms will then strengthen as it heads into southern Georgia and northeastern Florida during the afternoon and evening hours. Daytime heating combined with steamy air will prime the atmosphere for violent thunderstorms. In addition to the storms that roll into southern Georgia and northeastern Florida, a fresh batch of powerful storms will erupt across eastern Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky later this afternoon. These storms will then continue to push to the south and east during the overnight hours. The greatest threats include damaging wind gusts past 60 mph. Strong gusty winds can bring down trees and power lines, leading to power outages. Some of the strongest storms can produce large hail to the size of ping pong balls. Hailstones of this magnitude can cause damage to windows and tender vegetation. While the threat for tornadoes is low, a twister or two touching down and causing destruction cannot be ruled out. Due to the fact that the boundary separating cool air from moist air will be very slow moving, additional threats for severe thunderstorms will continue into the day on Tuesday. Be sure to have a plan in place before severe weather threatens. Heed all watches and warnings and keep in mind a safe place to retreat to in the event that thunderstorms are bearing down on your area. [link to www.accuweather.com] |
