A question for the more experienced quake watchers...

Would any aftershocks be expected with this type of earthquake?

there's going to be another one.

probably not in victoria.. earthquake would of released most the energy it has built up. i would not rule out a earthquake next few months in indonesia, or volcanic activity there

To back up my statement I shall post this again.

If you look at earthquake statistics in most regions of the world, including California, you will find that for every magnitude 5 earthquake, there are about 10 that have a magnitude of 4, and for each magnitude 4, there are 10 with magnitude 3. Unfortunately, this means there are not enough small earthquakes to relieve enough stress to prevent the large events. In fact, it would take 32 magnitude 5's, 1000 magnitude 4's, or 32,000 magnitude 3's to equal the energy produced in one magnitude 6 event.

oh really.

everything i have ever read or watched indicates otherwise, if it did not release pressure that is built up, the earthquake would not really stop, and you would not felt it hundreds of miles away. a few hours after the earthquake near melbourne, a shockwave will reach brisbane (although they will not feel it... is this not because of energy being released?? the further away, the less you feel, until feel nothing, as the energy dissipates.

your theory suggests that earthquakes are not caused, by what actually causes them.

it seems you lack in the intelligence department. sorry no pun intended.. it is just that, you yourself talk about needing soooooo many more smaller earthquakes to happen, to and i qoute "relieve enough stress to prevent the large events"

ummm.. righteo! you just proved your own theory wrong! LOL

OBVIOUSLY, if there are a number of smaller events that relieve enough stress in the plates etc it will offset a bigger event... does this not prove that earthquakes relieve stress/pressure etc?? because the fact is, bigger earthquakes happen because of so much built of stress/pressure and when it finally happens, a humoungous amount of energy is released which sends shockwaves everywhere, causes damage, and is felt at great distances.... show me some credible scientific evidence that says earthquakes to not release energy or relieve energy, instead of posting links to something that actually prove im right
