Syrian army amassing near Turkish border, FSA general claims

A general in the rebel Free Syria Army said today that Syrian government forces had amassed around 170 tanks north of the city Aleppo, near the Turkish border, but there was no independent confirmation of the report.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, an association of senior officers who defected from President Bashar al-Assad's forces, said the tanks had assembled at the Infantry School near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, 30 kilometers from the Turkish border.

"The tanks are now at the Infantry School. They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious [Syrian] towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," Sheikh told Reuters by telephone from the border.

He said the tanks were mostly from the 17th Mechanised Division.

Turkey deployed air defense weaponry along its border with Syria yesterday, following Syria's downing of a Turkish warlplane over the Mediterranean on Friday.

The day went badly for us. We lost Chunuk Bair, and without it we cannot win the battle. The Turks have fought very finely, and all praise their courage. It was wonderful to see them charging down the hill, through the storm of shrapnel, under the white ghost wreaths of smoke.

Turkish jet shot without notice, defecting Syrian colonel says

The Turkish jet recently downed by Syrian forces was shot without warning, a violation of regulations which could not be completed without Damascus’ knowledge, said a colonel from the Syrian Air Forces who was based in Aleppo during the incident before defecting to Turkey two days later.

“We’ve experienced these kinds of faults and border violations with Turkey before, but there was always a warning [given] first until this incident,” the defected colonel, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, told the Hürriyet Daily News in an interview yesteday.

Turkey to pick new missile defence system soon

Turkey is to pick a new long-range air defence missile system soon, as tension builds with neighbouring Syria, media and foreign diplomats said today.

Companies vying for the four billion dollar (3.2 billion euro) contract include Raytheon and Lockheed Martin of the United States, Rosoboronexport of Russia, CPMIEC of China and the French-Italian consortium, Eurosam, they said.

A Western diplomatic source said a shortlist would be announced on July 11 or 12.

The news comes a week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane, prompting Turkey to start beefing up its forces along their lengthy border with anti-aircraft guns, missile batteries and tanks.

Turkey also hosts a NATO early warning radar as part of a new defence system aimed at protecting Europe from missiles coming from the Middle East, notably Iran.

Turkish policies led to bloodshed in Syria: Assad

Syrian President Bashar al Assad accused Syria's foes of trying to interfere in his country's internal affairs with U.N. resolutions and by bringing about the failure of Kofi Annan's peace plan, in a rare interview broadcast yesterday.

But he said he did not believe the crisis would result in military action in Syria.

What happened in Libya was "not a solution to be copied because it took Libya from one situation into a much worse one. We all now see how the Libyan people are paying the price," he said.

He had harsh words for Syria's neighbour Turkey, relations with which have worsened following the shooting down of one of its military planes by Syrian forces last Friday.

"The policies of the Turkish officials lead to the killing and bloodshed of the Syrian people," said Assad.

Explorer boat ready to find missing pilots

The United States’ Nautilus explorer has been officially assigned to help locate the missing pilots and the wreckage of a Turkish aircraft which was shot down by Syria last week, daily Milliyet reported today.
The underwater vehicle, which has undergone four days of preparation in Istanbul's Haydarpaşa harbor, is expected to arrive at the scene in two and half days after departing today.
Turkey had been in contact with countries and international companies that can search below a depth of 1,000 meters, which is greater than the capability of the Navy’s present Çeşme boat, the official told the Hürriyet Daily News yesterday.
The Nautilus became famous after locating the wreckage of the Titanic in 1985.

National Security Council displays decisiveness on Syrian jet crisis

urkey's National Security Council (MGK) met under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gül to discuss the latest developments on Turkey and its region.

The MGK said Turkey was maintaining all its international rights in regard to the crisis with Syria, which shot down a Turkish jet on June 22, touching off a crisis in Ankara.

The council also said Ankara supported a transition to democracy in Syria.

The body also said terrorist activities would not succeed in sabotaging Turkey's goodwill and the search for a solution to the Kurdish issue.

Turkey and Turkish Cyprus also reserve all their rights in the search for natural resources in their region, the MGK said.
