Reporting from the MD suburbs around DC.

One notable observation when traveling around the area was encounters with the self-reliant types. They are quite pleasant in their behavior with unexpected and novel conditions.

No panic or wild-eyed confusion; as seen from the pampered cretins endangering the rest of civil society.

Their impulsive or violent action abounds when simple forethought was all that is required.

Take traffic signals not working. Pretend it is a stop sign. For EVERYONE. Electricity down or fallen trees blocking roads. Relax it will be rectified before you can get a hotel room.

Whatever happened to friends and family? Go stay with them if you can. The rest of us are tired of your whining and complaining.

Gas stations that are opened when everything else is closed are dangerous war zones around the dumb and the violent-- stay away.

As for all communications down don't tell me this is the first time you had to fend for yourself without phone or Internet. If so then learn from it instead of FREAKING-OUT.

Rant-off~Thanks

Re: WV without power, gas, and grocery stores out of stock/closed?
I spoke with my mom near Lewisburg WV today. She said they have no cell service but the land lines are working. They still don't have any power. Her neighbor has a generator and took a lot of her frozen foods, although she will probably lose a lot. She said she has plenty of food and is getting water from a spring and when I asked if she needed anything she said no, she had been through worse and this would be no different.

She also said the local news did not predict the storm that they got. She had watched the local weather forecast and had went out for the evening and almost got stranded away from her house.

Looks like the next storm is headed right for my family's location. Tried to get a hold of her via cell phone..all I'm getting is a busy signal. Usually would cut right to voice mail if I cannot get a hold of her.

How come this isn't all over the weather channel or news when 1-2% of the population is without power?

What do you want to bet that when the power is restored that they TPTB say, " Oh Dear, we forgot to back up, blah, blah, blah.. Now it is lost forever""

did power go out approx 30 mins before storm hit?

My sister said it did...and several other people are saying the same thing....interesting
 Quoting: Settle4It

A lot of areas in WV get power from far away. Power could have been knocked out farther west, before the storm hit, but at the rate it was traveling, power would have to come from western OH or IN to be knocked out 1/2 hr before the storm got there...

yes, heard they downplayed the storm because they expected it to not hit as hard in the mountains. My brother said he got blown down in his front yard and then couldn't get up for a little bit -- but then he's been known to exaggerate...

Re: WV without power, gas, and grocery stores out of stock/closed?
I find it shameful that some people here will kick those who have fallen down. How about making useful posts or not wasting our time?

For instance, in a disaster area, the area around hospitals will usually not lose power as most are essential services and have specially protected utility services. If they do, government will get them back online first since people would start dying in the hospitals when back-up generators reached their limits. Any businesses near a hospital stand a good chance of having power throughout the event or shortly after it passes. Think food, air conditioning, perhaps gasoline if you are lucky.

If you know of any Asian owned donut shops, they seem to open before other restaurants. I think it has to do with their work ethic and preparation for staying in business.

If a nearby neighbor has a power generator, perhaps he will share an extension cord to your house to keep your refrigerator going. Of course that means you actually have to be civilized enough to speak to your neighbor.
SmileyWink

If you have a coffee maker, you can use it to make a pot of steaming hot water. Just put in a filter without the coffee. A properly working maker should heat the water hot enough to kill most bacteria. I don't maintain your maker, so Your Mileage May Vary.

Good luck to everyone in that area. Pull together and your people will come through this.

Agreed. Any time there's a big storm or disaster the first thing I do is fill the tub with water out of habit. That's in case the storm makes any more water that comes through the pipes undrinkable or if it breaks the pipes.
 Quoting: skittle

Good thinking,i keep milk jugs for back-up water containers for drinking and it really helped a couple winters ago when we lost power because of ice/snow in Texas.

I filled the bathtub for flushing the toilet but i could have just went to the pond for that water.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18561549

Milk jugs is a very very very bad idea. You apparently don't know much about prepping or safety. Use milk jugs if you want but if you die from it............don't blame anyone...you have been warned.

You CAN use 7-up bottles for water but NOT milk jugs.

The only thing that saved you in your situation was probably that it was cold enough that bacteria didn't have a chance to grow in those milk jugs.

Any prepper KNOWS you don't save or use milk jugs.

This is really happening but some people need to settle down.

NBC Washington reported there are "lines" at gas stations all over the place at DC metro gas stations [link to www.nbcwashington.com]

I got gas in 5 minutes across the Maryland border. No different from usual.

It isn't as bad as they're making it out to be. In SOME cases. Obviously WV has some serious issues, I feel for them. I also feel fortunate I have power IN the city - if ours went out vs. some WV areas, I imagine all hell would break loose. I wouldn't be able to leave my apartment as my front door is electric-controlled. It would be more devastating for me as an urban resident at ground zero - I think - to get through a few days or even weeks of that.

Well, even if people did lose power before the storm, doesn't it matter where the actually grid is located?

I thought the grid was damaged?

I'm not that knowledgeable on power grids.

...or could it have been a solar storm and the storm was created to make it look like it was the storm's fault?? I know weird conspiracy! lol
 Quoting: Starry eyes

theyre burning the grid - reports of line fires.
 Quoting: Phennommennonn

That wouldn't explain why DC was hit. If they're going to intentionally take the whole thing down, DC will be the last to go since that's where their power structure is. Northern Virginia (home to many govt agencies and contractors, aka the hub of the Military Industrial Complex) was the hardest hit over here.

I am in DC and, luckily, kept my power. In fact, I slept through the whole thing. I am on the same grid as the Capitol so that helps, my friend just 5 miles to the south loses power for days in every small storm.

I was able to fill up my gas tank no problem. The shopping center up the street from me has been out since yesterday but all I did was drive 5 or so miles to find gas, open stores, no lines. I grabbed two 6-packs of beer from my favorite liquor store, warm dinner and a tank of gas and settled back in at home. It was not mayhem on the streets.

Traffic lights are out and people are acting crazy on the road but other than that, we're good.

We all know if they were "imploding" the grid, they certainly wouldn't go for DC. Many are still without power here and will be for quite some time. It isn't intentional, it's because Pepco (our local power authority) is inept and many lines are still above ground despite this happening any time the wind blows.

Southern WV'er here.

We got hit hard but everybodys really helping each other and as weird as this sound its been a great experience. I live about 20 miles as the crow flys north of Charleston in Kanawaha county. Yes up a hollar as you would expect.

Power, cable, phone and cell phone are out. Damage is as bad as you'd expect. Trees and telephone poles are down everywhere. Spent most of friday night helping neighbors cut and clear the road. Between everybody out here we have a good assortment of tractors, dozers and excavators.

When the work was finished I had everybody and their familys back to my house. I'm lucky to have a large generator and a pool. Been projecting movies outside and handing out beer/soda/water ever since then.

Kids are cooling off in the pool. There are a lot of elderly out here we so put in a window air conditioner and made an area for them to cool off. A guy up on the hill works for the phone company and has T1 thats working and is using it to provide wireless internet access for anybody within range.

A handfull of us have made it through all 10 pages of this thread and laughing our asses off. Keep it up we're getting a big kick out of all the stereotypes. :)

Bottom line dont worry about us. Every cellar is full and we're taking care of our own and anybody else who needs it and can make it here.

More storms are heading this way to good luck to everybody and god bless.

They are reporting that about 67% are still without power. I, fortunately, got power back last night. We are trying not to run too much so that we don't put any undo stress on the system.

There is no other state like WV though. We are tough people and can persevere through anything. I have seen whole communities come together to help one another out. For those who are talking crap about WV....if you came here and got stuck, we would still help you out because that is the kind of people we are.
