I have heard that the mountains and forests are beautiful and full of life. WV is one of the few states that I have not been through. I would be the first to admit that.

Well, OP, consider the good in this situation for your mama: now's the time to find out how much that 'boyfriend' of hers is really worth. It's one thing for her to sound like she's wringing her hands whilst chatting with her child but quite another if he does it. No grid power in the world can be 100% reliable. Hardly anyone would seriously take good weather conditions for granted, or the economy for granted, or their family for granted - or in short, anything at all for granted. Adults are supposed to know what to do when things go to shit. Your concern is commendable, in light of the callousness so rampant in today's youth, but you may as well know that parents, as a rule, have a mental block towards advice from their kids about anything; if she's not a prepper already, nothing you do will turn her into one.

Yes, talking with my sister who has power (Jackson Co. toward Parkersburg) about the catastrophic state of my other two sibs (eastern and central Roane Co.) has made me well aware of the breaks in their/our preps (I own land with one of them). It has also made me aware of what's going on in my own home in another state. These little dry runs are a blessing in disguise.

Yes, WV is beautiful and West Virginians are resourceful, but those in rural areas often have to be quite creative in the best of times. Everyday life is not a walk in the park. "That which does not kill us only makes us stronger."

people in WV know how to survive. that shit storm was CRAZY, upshur county didn't even know what hit em. sheetz gas station was the only one open and it still had no gas.

I bolded the only thing in your post that was a total waste of your typing time. They can't help that: they are insensitive assholes and will be the first ones whining when they run out of something and their neighbors turn out to be the same kind of people they are and won't give them squat.

Where one lives really has more to do with teaching prepping techniques than finances. People who live far from town usually store food against bad weather or trouble with transportation, (and economy on gas) and if their jobs are seasonal, against those less-busy months also. Construction work is a good example: there's never as much work around during winter. Even those who'd never consider themselves preppers, or believe the shit's going to hit the fan anytime soon, would stock their cupboards as well as they could in those circumstances just out of common sense.

Country dwellers are also more likely to invest, even in a small way, in alternative energy methods - because rural areas, especially mountain ones, have always had grid failures, even when there aren't any in the nearest town and they're the last on the list to get service from the power companies. They're more likely to use propane instead of 'natural gas' connections and there are usually extra tanks of the stuff around. They'll have woodstoves too, if they've the space. In a lot of cities, on the other hand, even suburban areas, you're 'not allowed' to stick a solar panel or two on your roof without some damned HOA or city code trying to ruin your life!

It's easier for property owners than for renters, because one can create one's own storage arrangements in one's own house, plant a garden and even hide food caches without running the risk of having to move out and letting the landlord take all their harvests. Modern housing, particularly in towns, is notoriously short on storage, which is how rented storage space has become such a widespread, and lucrative, business. In the average apartment or condo, you can't cuss a cat without getting fur in your mouth, so where would you store all those water tanks and survival gear? Have you noticed that the prices for those storage compartments have gone up a lot lately? It's getting to where a lot of working people really cannot afford that regular outlay anymore.

You're correct in your basic point: preparation is expensive and for the financially-challenged, must be managed over a period of time in a stable living arrangement. How many people are 'stable' in today's economy and sad job market? How many family relationships are stable? People who make stupid, insensitive pronouncements seem to think themselves indispensable and therefore immune to all these variables of modern life but they are not.

My intentions were not to have people argue about how this was handled, but to spread awareness of the situation. Is this really how things will be handled if something bigger comes?

I can't prepare ahead and I don't have any of the things you have listed. The newest thing I have is from 1998 and I have never had a credit card and I never plan too.
