Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell called the widespread power losses as "the largest non-hurricane power outage in Virginia history," as more storms threatened. "This is a very dangerous situation," the governor said, "the next few days in Virginia are going to be very, very difficult." About 2.5 million Virginian customers, or an estimated 7.5 million people, in are still without power.

I find it shameful that some people here will kick those who have fallen down. How about making useful posts or not wasting our time?

For instance, in a disaster area, the area around hospitals will usually not lose power as most are essential services and have specially protected utility services. If they do, government will get them back online first since people would start dying in the hospitals when back-up generators reached their limits. Any businesses near a hospital stand a good chance of having power throughout the event or shortly after it passes. Think food, air conditioning, perhaps gasoline if you are lucky.

If you know of any Asian owned donut shops, they seem to open before other restaurants. I think it has to do with their work ethic and preparation for staying in business.

If a nearby neighbor has a power generator, perhaps he will share an extension cord to your house to keep your refrigerator going. Of course that means you actually have to be civilized enough to speak to your neighbor.

If you have a coffee maker, you can use it to make a pot of steaming hot water. Just put in a filter without the coffee. A properly working maker should heat the water hot enough to kill most bacteria. I don't maintain your maker, so Your Mileage May Vary.

Good luck to everyone in that area. Pull together and your people will come through this.

Good advice, but you OBVIOUSLY don't know much about WV. My brother and I have a slogan: "Almost Heaven, Hardly America."
 Quoting: Little Bee

I have heard that the mountains and forests are beautiful and full of life. WV is one of the few states that I have not been through. I would be the first to admit that.

But I do know people. Humanity is resilient and resourceful, especially when the chips are down, and when you think they are down and cannot possibly get up, they often surprise you. Studied as a species, mankind is quite interesting.

Be safe.

Well, OP, consider the good in this situation for your mama: now's the time to find out how much that 'boyfriend' of hers is really worth. It's one thing for her to sound like she's wringing her hands whilst chatting with her child but quite another if he does it. No grid power in the world can be 100% reliable. Hardly anyone would seriously take good weather conditions for granted, or the economy for granted, or their family for granted - or in short, anything at all for granted. Adults are supposed to know what to do when things go to shit. Your concern is commendable, in light of the callousness so rampant in today's youth, but you may as well know that parents, as a rule, have a mental block towards advice from their kids about anything; if she's not a prepper already, nothing you do will turn her into one.

It’s specifically designed to control the masses by generating and perpetuating confusion. in the past the truth about certain national incidents were not found out and revealed to the public for years. Now, thanks to the internet, it takes only a few months to discover the policies and activities of our Government and mega-corporate empires —that are criminal to say the least.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Alan Isaacman
The People Vs Larry Flynt
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. And that's not freedom. That is not freedom. So, be careful. Thank you."

This is really happening but some people need to settle down.

NBC Washington reported there are "lines" at gas stations all over the place at DC metro gas stations [link to www.nbcwashington.com]

I got gas in 5 minutes across the Maryland border. No different from usual.

It isn't as bad as they're making it out to be. In SOME cases. Obviously WV has some serious issues, I feel for them. I also feel fortunate I have power IN the city - if ours went out vs. some WV areas, I imagine all hell would break loose. I wouldn't be able to leave my apartment as my front door is electric-controlled. It would be more devastating for me as an urban resident at ground zero - I think - to get through a few days or even weeks of that.

Yes, talking with my sister who has power (Jackson Co. toward Parkersburg) about the catastrophic state of my other two sibs (eastern and central Roane Co.) has made me well aware of the breaks in their/our preps (I own land with one of them). It has also made me aware of what's going on in my own home in another state. These little dry runs are a blessing in disguise.

Yes, WV is beautiful and West Virginians are resourceful, but those in rural areas often have to be quite creative in the best of times. Everyday life is not a walk in the park. "That which does not kill us only makes us stronger."

 Quoting: Nostalgic Rain

I bolded the only thing in your post that was a total waste of your typing time. They can't help that: they are insensitive assholes and will be the first ones whining when they run out of something and their neighbors turn out to be the same kind of people they are and won't give them squat.

Where one lives really has more to do with teaching prepping techniques than finances. People who live far from town usually store food against bad weather or trouble with transportation, (and economy on gas) and if their jobs are seasonal, against those less-busy months also. Construction work is a good example: there's never as much work around during winter. Even those who'd never consider themselves preppers, or believe the shit's going to hit the fan anytime soon, would stock their cupboards as well as they could in those circumstances just out of common sense.

Country dwellers are also more likely to invest, even in a small way, in alternative energy methods - because rural areas, especially mountain ones, have always had grid failures, even when there aren't any in the nearest town and they're the last on the list to get service from the power companies. They're more likely to use propane instead of 'natural gas' connections and there are usually extra tanks of the stuff around. They'll have woodstoves too, if they've the space. In a lot of cities, on the other hand, even suburban areas, you're 'not allowed' to stick a solar panel or two on your roof without some damned HOA or city code trying to ruin your life!

It's easier for property owners than for renters, because one can create one's own storage arrangements in one's own house, plant a garden and even hide food caches without running the risk of having to move out and letting the landlord take all their harvests. Modern housing, particularly in towns, is notoriously short on storage, which is how rented storage space has become such a widespread, and lucrative, business. In the average apartment or condo, you can't cuss a cat without getting fur in your mouth, so where would you store all those water tanks and survival gear? Have you noticed that the prices for those storage compartments have gone up a lot lately? It's getting to where a lot of working people really cannot afford that regular outlay anymore.

You're correct in your basic point: preparation is expensive and for the financially-challenged, must be managed over a period of time in a stable living arrangement. How many people are 'stable' in today's economy and sad job market? How many family relationships are stable? People who make stupid, insensitive pronouncements seem to think themselves indispensable and therefore immune to all these variables of modern life but they are not.

Maybe she doesn't have money to prepare ahead like that. I am sick of you assholes coming on here and saying you should have been prepared.
Some people are damn lucky to get enough to eat every day and can't stock up for these kind of things. Stop being insensitive assholes!

BS!!!!

not being judgey here, but people have their
priorities completely ASS BACKWARDS nowadays,
I'm sure she has a flatscreen and brand-name shoes.

...if ppl can put on their credit cards the
STUPIDEST things they could prep or take
survival/gardening/self-defense courses
on their visa too! ...but they don't,
just their iPhonepeace5.

Call bullshit if you want but you don't know what this woman has.
I can't prepare ahead and I don't have any of the things you have listed. The newest thing I have is from 1998 and I have never had a credit card and I never plan too.

Bottom line someone come into a forum asking for some help or advice and you came in here and showed your true selfish colors.
Having priorities backwards? To me that would be someone who is so high on their horse they have to down someone who is true need.

No high horse.
Common sense, simple common sense.

And no, I don't know what this woman has,
but I'm pretty sure she has no house no more.

ohappy

So... how's that whole "hopey-changey"
thing working out for ya??

What do you mean how is the hopey changey working? I didn't vote for Obama, if that is what you mean?
And no one said she didn't have a home. She has a power outage, something she has no control over.
Common sense? Ha! You have none.

Humans are so hate-filled and assume the worst out of people or people that have relatives that are in a situation.

I just don't get it...

I didn't want this man in office either. Anyway, what matters is there are people out there stranded on the road with no where to get help...or in a mile long line at the gas station.

:)

At least some people get it!

...if you'd seen what I've seen, you would understand me.

(Most) people's priorities are whacked right now,
most live in lala land and reason with TV logic.

I get no pleasure out of mocking anyone, ignorance simply hurts. And beware, positivism is killing all hope, actions are needed, not just positive, passive thinking, keystrokes and intentions.

Travel a little, travel the world a bit,
leave your state, leave the US for a while,
just not as a tourist, but live, work and
talk to ppl at random everywhere u go, after
and only after will your eyes open with bitter
sweet tears of sadness and joy, exasperation
and hope ...the Prussian school system has invaded
every corner of the globe, still the human spirit
breaks through and lives on.

These days are bringing the best and worse of people everywhere you look; I know what side I'm on.

Big hug OP,
Peace.
