Read the latest update from the Associated Press. They are reporting emergency call centers being down due to power outages and cell phone and communication tower problems as well.

How close is she to Maryland? Both Hagerstown and Frederick got by with little damage and little power outages.

I live very very close to the northern West Virginia border, and I can tell you that last night...some very powerful storms went through here. It did not receive much media attention since it was so localized, but I tell you it's been a long time since I seen one come through that strong.

Just a possibility for ya!!

They probably dont have good battery/gen back-up for the pumps,your mom should start boiling some drinking water like today.

Water is first thing she should take care of!

This is what I found so far.

A neighbor notified my mother about the shut down...I will be keeping an eye out for that on the news.

On one of those links i posted it said if you have problems dont call 911/411 etc just go if you can to local police or fire stations,911 is down is what the story said and i think it was for the D.C/maryland area

Agreed. Any time there's a big storm or disaster the first thing I do is fill the tub with water out of habit. That's in case the storm makes any more water that comes through the pipes undrinkable or if it breaks the pipes.

Yes, I told her to do that.

I also told her she needs to store her cold food in ice water mixed with salt and keep in the fridge. Thankfully, she has a gas stove.

I heard there have been people freaking out at the local CVS and gas stations.

My daughter in law is in WV for a funeral and it is true.

West Virginia...sorry but I got hosed by WV's cops and Judges.

Hope everyone in the area affected by the storm and loss of energy/resources is going to be ok.

Sorry for the loss and I hope your daughter in law can find a place to fill up the car.

One thing that I had learned when I lived in Florida is to be prepared.

1. Watch the forecast
2. Gas up
3. Stock up

This is insane.


I'd make sure to fill up before I get into the outage area.

Good thinking,i keep milk jugs for back-up water containers for drinking and it really helped a couple winters ago when we lost power because of ice/snow in Texas.

I filled the bathtub for flushing the toilet but i could have just went to the pond for that water.

Words to live by.

There's gas, people don't realize that gas stations have to stop selling in such circumstances and only emergency vehicles are allowed fuel.

My mom lives about 25 miles from there.

Obama will help her.

I would relax OP....if your mom is like most West Virginians I know, she will be ok. Even though a lot of jokes are made about them, they are very resilient and resourceful in most cases. Hell, most know how to "live off the land" in worst case scenarios (some do it just by choice alone)! So I wouldn't worry much!!
