(Most) people's priorities are whacked right now,
most live in lala land and reason with TV logic.

I get no pleasure out of mocking anyone, ignorance simply hurts. And beware, positivism is killing all hope, actions are needed, not just positive, passive thinking, keystrokes and intentions.

Travel a little, travel the world a bit,

Call bullshit if you want but you don't know what this woman has.
I can't prepare ahead and I don't have any of the things you have listed. The newest thing I have is from 1998 and I have never had a credit card and I never plan too.

Bottom line someone come into a forum asking for some help or advice and you came in here and showed your true selfish colors.
Having priorities backwards? To me that would be someone who is so high on their horse they have to down someone who is true need.

And no, I don't know what this woman has,
but I'm pretty sure she has no house no more.

So... how's that whole "hopey-changey"
thing working out for ya??

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18973125

What do you mean how is the hopey changey working? I didn't vote for Obama, if that is what you mean?
And no one said she didn't have a home. She has a power outage, something she has no control over.
Common sense? Ha! You have none.

I didn't want this man in office either. Anyway, what matters is there are people out there stranded on the road with no where to get help...or in a mile long line at the gas station.

:)

At least some people get it!
 Quoting: Starry eyes

I live here and I am seeing a direct result. I want these people to get help. I did post some info on shelters and other places a few pages back.

Day three of no power other than the ole generator....plenty of food and water. The first day i traveled 10 miles(normal) for gasoline. I was smart enough to go out early and found a station on back up power. By the time i was leaving the station people were starting to panic (especially the out of towners). For those of you living easy..better stock up now.

1st hand report from friends in (eastern) North Carolina

"I am fine, we lost power for a couple of hours, wind, rain, thunder and lightning. Evidently, there were a couple of tornados in the area, nothing confirmed by the weather service. A few local areas with much damage, roofs off, trees down and on house, cars, etc. sheds and barns destroyed. Two people in Beaufort County were killed and 40 taken to the hospital with storm related injuries, according to the local TV. Another death in a neighboring county. Still alot without power.

It is amazing that one side of the road can have nothing and the other side is devestated. I guess that is the nature of tornados.

Wife was in the Richmond VA area over the weekend, several confirmed tornados up there. A tree fell on her cousin's truck, big mess in their yard. Much the same story there, one area nothing, the other massive destruction. Many there without power from a storm last week, still didn't have power, so they couldn't loose it.

Thankful me and mine are OK, but hurting for those who aren't.

Thanks for asking."

Hope this info helps.

I live in charleston but I'm on vacation in SW Virginia in the Dublin area. Power is out here also. I can only imagine what it will be like when TS(really)HTF. Prepare now.
 Quoting: TheFireman 9345318

Yes, talking with my sister who has power (Jackson Co. toward Parkersburg) about the catastrophic state of my other two sibs (eastern and central Roane Co.) has made me well aware of the breaks in their/our preps (I own land with one of them). It has also made me aware of what's going on in my own home in another state. These little dry runs are a blessing in disguise.
 Quoting: Little Bee

very true. something that folks need to realize is if the power goes out, cash registers do not work, atms do not work, gas stations will not pump gas. (unless they have generators)
I live in WA and while we don't get tornadoes or hurricanes, we DO get 65+mph windstorms about every other year. the last one about two years ago came with 16" of snow and brought down a power line. We had no elec for 40hrs. Thank god for the woodstove and gen. (as soon as the wind started i went and got gas for the gen.) made sandwiches and played Risk for 3 hours.
the windstorm in Dec 2006 no power for 3 days, 85+mph winds,
the ice storm in 1991 no power for FIVE DAYS AND NO GENERATOR. (thats when I went out and bought one)
folks need to get a headsup an this and get gas and food.
if you don't need it for the gen, you can always put it in your car.
get stuff to make sandwiches, so you don't need a stove.
they had an idea this might happen.
why do they wait?

p.s. the WORST STORM EVER HERE, look up the Columbus day storm of 1962, I was an 8yo at the time, I have no use for high winds. 100+mph winds in Seattle and over 150 on the coast.

My intentions were not to have people argue about how this was handled, but to spread awareness of the situation. Is this really how things will be handled if something bigger comes?

How long have you been posting here? Did you really expect anything different at GLP? Is this how things will be if something bigger comes? On GLP, certainly: a lot of silly bickering and snarling. In the outside world, it'll be far worse! At the least, we all here owe you our thanks. It's not as if anyone can depend upon the MSM to tell us what's going on in the country. If we don't tell each other directly, we'll all be left in the dark when the info counts, in more ways than one.

And the more arguing going on in the thread, the higher page ranking it gets! Your news by itself surely merits a pin but this thread becoming a hot-spot doesn't hurt either. You have given us all a lot to think about, no matter who admits that or doesn't. Most of us really are going to be left with our pants down in a crisis like this.

I spoke with my mom again last night. Day 3 with no power and she still has no idea when she will get it back. She still has food and water and the community is banding together to get through this.

Mom is 86 and if this goes much longer, I'm loading up the generator, chain saw, gas, and a trailer load of groceries and heading up that way.

Be sure to take a firearm with you. Those packing up and heading out in situations like this need to make sure you are aware that you could be stopped and robbed of all you have out on the road and then you are left with nothing and stranded.

I understand you have to do what you have to do and that there are still some common sense people for the most part getting through this but just be aware that when it really does hit the fan country wide that leaving home(bugging out, or helping a friend/family) is a last resort.

Yeah..people that head into a situation risk getting in a situation themselves. Just be prepared and plan, so you know where to get gas and other resources if need be.

This is exactly why people start threads about being prepared. Inevitably, they get ridiculed. It is just plain common sense to have 30 days of food, water, flashlights, batteries, candles, propane, charcoal and water again and a generator if at all possible. Water is extremely important. Buy at the very least about 20, l gallon size jugs of water (much better for you than tap water anyway). As you use them, take the empties back to the store and refill them. This keeps you with fresh water supply. Just make sure that you have at least 20 at all times.

The loss of access to gas is something to keep in mind for most semi major natural disaster scenerios. A generator is great for short periods to keep food from spoiling. But longer term having some 12volts around will be important. Even with no cell service you can use your phone screen for lighting. Or put up some low power 12v LED lights. If you've got a CB it can also give you some talk time.

That's all about $200 of parts.

Put in some more series $ for roof top solar with batteries rather than grid tie only, you've got your fridge covered too. Save the genny for a long string of cloudy days.

That's good advice. Generators only work as long as you have gas to run them, which is getting in short supply during this power outage. Remember the old propane refrigerators that could run with a 5-gallon propane tank? Those can still be found for less than generators cost now. Lots cheaper too, than the newer model refrigerators, that'll set you back a couple of grand. Solar panels are more practical - if you don't live in a high population area where they can be seen by a lot of people. If you do, people are going to be banging on your door wanting to use your power and climbing on your roof to take those panels. Doubt that at your peril.

I think a lot of us should pay another visit to the Surviving in Argentina blog. That wonderful writer there said something years ago that I never forgot, roughly this: the one who's going to try to kill you for what you have is not going to be the scruffy-looking hood in a leather jacket but the nice, conventionally-dressed businessman and neighbor you thought you knew, standing there with a wife and kids in tow.

For the last few years here on this forum, there have been a lot of sharp, observant posters commenting about how people seem to be so much 'on edge' lately, like they're fixing to wig out at any moment. Now, put them under some real environmental stress, like this, and well...

I would relax OP....if your mom is like most West Virginians I know, she will be ok. Even though a lot of jokes are made about them, they are very resilient and resourceful in most cases. Hell, most know how to "live off the land" in worst case scenarios (some do it just by choice alone)! So I wouldn't worry much!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1230093

My #1 complaint about these self sufficient, live off the land west virginians...THEY CANT LIVE WITHOUT THEIR GENERATOR POWERING THEIR TELEVISIONS AND BUG ZAPPERS!!!! My neighbors who all claim to be great white hunters and can live off the land all have their generators running 24 hours a day. They are sitting in their houses, watching tv. Is that what self sufficient is? I am ready to scream having to listen to the generators run constantly. Those who are true survivalists do not run their generators for more than 4 hours a day- and NOT to watch TV for christ sake!

If you're using a generator, don't forget to attach it to a ground rod by a thicker than normal ground wire!!!!

Almost electrocuted myself yesterday when the ground wire came loose.

white metal roofs, houses built east to west/windows on south, east and west side for solar passive heating/cooling...thin shade trees on east and west end of house(the trees that grow straight with little branches to catch the wind to pull them over...gas or wood stove, lots of rice, solar powered well... any questions...OR a second sectional white metal roof on pillars you can crank the second roof over in the summer to shade your house and allow a wind buffer...their are many ways to use weather and the seasons to your advantage without line based power...my favorite is a multilevel white steel building with foam insulation east to west and solar power...

If anyone is following this... I'm in calhoun county, WV. Sorta north central part of the state. Powers been out a week. Canned the stuff thawing in my freezers. Mom n dad have gen. I installed for them at their place. We have free natural gas. My wife and 3 boys washed clothes from rain barrel water in a steel tub. With a washing board I bought as an antique. It's in the upper 90s. Hasn't been gas or ice in town, but now main part of town has power. LED lights hooked to speaker wire on a car battery and an inverter that my dsl router and phone base are plugged into give me light and communication. Small solar panel charges the other battery. If I had gravity fed spring water plumbed in, all woulda been fine. Trees and power lines are down all over still. other power companies are here helping as well. It sucks, but not too bad.

I get no pleasure out of mocking anyone, ignorance simply hurts. And beware, positivism is killing all hope, actions are needed, not just positive, passive thinking, keystrokes and intentions.

Travel a little, travel the world a bit,
leave your state, leave the US for a while,
just not as a tourist, but live, work and
talk to ppl at random everywhere u go, after
and only after will your eyes open with bitter
sweet tears of sadness and joy, exasperation
and hope ...the Prussian school system has invaded
every corner of the globe, still the human spirit
breaks through and lives on.

These days are bringing the best and worse of people everywhere you look; I know what side I'm on.

Big hug OP,
Peace.

I'm just concerned for my family and everyone that is in that situation...

Thanks and I hope everyone stays safe.

Yes, I agree you are "just" concerned about your family.

That is the kind of gender specific self centered mindset that is ruining our country.

The "just" was an explaination of my point in response to the quoted text. It wasn't a meaning for only caring for my family.

Besides..what is the problem with being more concerned for my family? Don't you have a caring family?

Anyway..I'm more caring towards strangers than most.

You..douchbag troll should have looked throughout the thread to see I have been trying my best to keep people updated as well as people helping me out in the situation.

A lot of us have family in WV and I'm glad that I started a thread to keep everyone as updated as they could on the situation.

No matter what anyone does, there is always someone that is going to be unsatisfied. Damn!

Re: WV without power, gas, and grocery stores out of stock/closed?
Here's a bit of local news:

Still a lot of people around here without power, they have set up AC centers to deal with the intense heat and community fireworks cancelled.
