It is not yet known whether the flare was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME) - an outburst of particles that can trigger a geomagnetic storm on Earth and damage the electrical grid.

Joe Kunches of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder said one of the NASA satellites tasked with watching for solar weather, SOHO, was “on maneuvers” when the flare launched.

That will make the task of predicting the course of any subsequent CME more difficult.

“The home plate umpire wasn’t paying any attention,” said Kunches.

Re: Sunspot 1520 Kicking one out right now..X -flare and still rising..LDE..X1.4...
From spaceweather.com:

-FLARE Big sunspot AR1520 unleashed an X1.4-class solar flare on July 12th at 1653 UT. Because the sunspot was directly facing Earth at the time of the blast, this is a geoeffective event. Stay tuned for updates about possible CMEs and radio blackouts.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation from the blast site:

The UV and X-ray pulse from the flare will have partially ionized Earth's upper atmosphere on the dayside of our planet, disturbing the normal propagation of radio signals. Watch the Realtime Space Weather Gallery for possible reports of sudden ionospheric disturbances and other effects.

No doom....but very interesting nonetheless!

Worth remember that there have been 9 flares bigger than this one during this solar cycle and there was nothing to worry about on earth from any of those.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7546576

most of those flares were not earth directed. the ones that were, barley were directed at earth.

most of you may think all you get from most cme and flares is pretty boring aurora but skin cancer is the worst thing people in high latitudes have to worry about with strong earth directed flares and cme.

if the strongest x flare to come from this solar cycle X6.9 flare were earth directed it would have caused us to go back to the stone age.

Can you READ, we, 2 or more of us have posted there is a CME and posted the LINK to the one image so far on STEREO. REAd, READ, READ. OK. Please spend some of your own efforts to read and study otherwise. I have a teaching thread here, please spend some time learning from it. It is also a thread where I just post stuff for my own records. Thread: Nip's solar/quake thread read the first few pages on it. NICT is no longer available so can ignore NICT links.

Flares are not CMES, they come from sunspots and magnetic filaments but a CME MAY be ejected with them. There is a CME visible on stereo behind that is consistant with a CME being ejected. The flare has already arrive on earth minutes after it happened, this is what flares do. Any CMES ejected generally arrive 2 to 5 days later. A CME is a matter ejection.

There are now 4 clear images of the CME on Stereo BEhind. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Stereo AHead and soho are not yet posting.

What if 1519, 1520, 1521 combine into a massive sunspot?

Has something like this ever happened?

LOL what?

There was an X5 flare on July 14, 2000 that launched a full halo CME directly at earth that caused no power failures.

The 1989 storm that caused a 9 hour powercut in Québec came from an earth directed CME after an X15 flare.

So how exactly would a X6.9 send us back to the stone age when an X5 has no impact and a much bigger X15 just left Québec without power for less than half a day?

Do some research into "The Carrington Event" of 1859. Big solar flare and CME.

Yes, The Carrington Event would probably be most unpleasant if it were to happen today.

I mean I love science and I find it interesting to know what is going on with our solar system but I wouldn't poop my pants over a small flare.

We had a X28+...AN X28!! 4/11/03 and we did not lose our electricity then so I'm going to go on a hunch we wont right now either... I can not imagine the mass panic and hysteria on this site during that day. God it had to be marvelous
