Iran would want to show the world and the gulf states in particular that they are not afraid of the United States and can also go toe to toe with the US military in a fight. They will use both conventional and uncoventional methods of warfare. It would be very bad politically for O as well if Israel makes the first move and goes unilaterally, it will give the electorate the impression that the White House doesn't back Israel (a major strategic ally in the middle east) and for all intents and purposes has turned it's back on it.
