Eighty percent of the city's budget goes to paying its workers and rather than laying off police officers and firefighters, the city declared an emergency allowing for the suspension of union agreements.

Even with a high unemployment rate there are plenty of decent paying jobs assuming youre able bodied and posess slightly above average intelligence you can make a decent living in Vegas.

North Las Vegas is a complete, separate entity than Las Vegas.
Has nothing to do with the fiscal well being of the city of Las Vegas. Think of it this way: you have on one hand the city of Bumfuck. Then there is the adjacent city of North Bumfuck. When they incorporated, North Bumfuck decided to cash in on the name of it's bigger and more well known neighbor.

I use to live in Vegas! We called it North Town . This is where all the
crack heads , meth heads , prostitution are at, Its terrible there. It looks like it went bankrupt 25 years ago. When I had first moved to green valley LV , the locals warned me not to cross the border to nomans land . It really is that bad.

First of all this is not Las Vegas, it is North Las Vegas which is a completely different city. Second the people that say this is the ghetto are stupid. Most of North Las Vegas has been built over the last 10 years and are newer homes with families. North Las Vegas has nothing to do with the strip or downtown or any tourist casinos.

Are you serious? North Las Vegas has tons of industry and the race track. If they go bankrupt it most definitely will effect the rest of Las Vegas. The casino area has been teetering on the edge for years. Having cities around them declare bankruptcy could be the end. Tourism is what they depend on and NOBODY is spending money. Even people who live in N. Las Vegas spend money in the casinos and restaurants, well, they USED to...

Wrong, if the city of North Las Vegas goes bankrupt, the state takes over. The way North Las Vegas manages and runs itself to financial doom has no affect on Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder city, or any other communities in the manner you describe, nor the businesses or casinos within the city. It only affects the city itself, and all the piss-poor decisions it made with union contracts and other obligations. The problem here is like the person you quoted said, North Las Vegas is a dump. True, they built and expanded in the last decade, but the fact is that it is all a crime ridden dump. Most of the city employees from firefighters, police, and other government services don't even live within the city because it is such a dump. Why is it a dump? There is a long history behind that, but truth is, there is no need for a North Las Vegas to exist. Hopefully after the state takes the city over, the city of Las Vegas can annex North Las Vegas and take over fire, police, and other public services. There is no need for such a small geographical valley to have 5 separate fire departments, 4 police departments, and a the same public services being repeated which is a waste of taxpayers money.

I bet the average people who live and work there do...

north las vegas is separate from Las Vegas, not another county per se...but township, they have their own police dept. Which has been in trouble for a while now. Crime is very high in North town also, always been that way. It' has always been a dump

I don't live in Nevada...but, here me out.

Part of the problem is....wait for it...the wages they pay. I don't know about your personal experiences, but whenever I have to deal with "civil servants" they are generally about as clever as a bag of hammers. I remember that years ago, the saying was "civil jobs don't pay well but they are steady...get good benefits and guaranteed pension"...

Now...just do some research work into the wages these people get paid...it's off the charts for the few skills they ever actually display.

I don't think any civil servant should be making 6 figures a year...I don't care what they do...sure, firefighters risk their lives...do it cause you love it or go home...same for cops. Either you want to make the world a safer place...aka...'serve and protect" or you don't...cash in and go home...no big bucks for you either.

THIS is the reason cities are going broke and breaking the contracts with retirees....cause the new wave of greedy selfish assholes think they deserve the big bucks to take your picture at the DMV, write you a ticket or knock the cat out of the tree.

If they want to make a decent living...get the fuck out of public service...if you want a steady, thankless job with mediocre income...stay there.
