Senator Byrd: No President Is Above the Law
t r u t h o u t | Statement

Monday 19 December 2005

Americans have been stunned at the recent news of the abuses of power by an overzealous President. It has become apparent that this Administration has engaged in a consistent and unrelenting pattern of abuse against our Country's law-abiding citizens, and against our Constitution.

We have been stunned to hear reports about the Pentagon gathering information and creating databases to spy on ordinary Americans whose only sin is choosing to exercise their First Amendment right to peaceably assemble. Those Americans who choose to question the Administration's flawed policy in Iraq are labeled by this Administration as "domestic terrorists."

We now know that the F.B.I.'s use of National Security Letters on American citizens has increased one hundred fold, requiring tens of thousands of individuals to turn over personal information and records. These letters are issued without prior judicial review, and provide no real means for an individual to challenge a permanent gag order.

Through news reports, we have been shocked to learn of the CIA's practice of rendition, and the so-called "black sites," secret locations in foreign countries where abuse and interrogation have been exported to escape the reach of U.S. laws protecting against human rights abuses.

We know that Vice President Dick Cheney has asked for exemptions for the CIA from the language contained in the McCain torture amendment banning cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment. Thank God his pleas have been rejected by this Congress.

Now comes the stomach-churning revelation that through an executive order, President Bush has circumvented both the Congress and the courts. He has usurped the Third Branch of government - the branch charged with protecting the civil liberties of our people - by directing the National Security Agency to intercept and eavesdrop on the phone conversations and e-mails of American citizens without a warrant, which is a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment. He has stiff-armed the People's Branch of government. He has rationalized the use of domestic, civilian surveillance with a flimsy claim that he has such authority because we are at war. The executive order, which has been acknowledged by the President, is an end-run around the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which makes it unlawful for any official to monitor the communications of an individual on American soil without the approval of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

What is very disturbing is that there is no one who is in power that is stopping this. We have been sold up the river, and no one is going to protect us and make them stop.

Interesting that no on bitched when Clinton did the same thing.

However, ANY President that subverts the Constitution needs to be removed.

There must be more than one special ops group on duty here at GLP. It's impossible for sane, rational, free-thinking Americans to support spying on American citizens.

It's impossible to think that ANY red-blooded American could support the raping of our Constitution.

All you distruptors, all you people who just jump on a thread and attack other posters or the OP when it comes to a bush thread need to know that there has been a pattern of abuse of office in this administration and decide for yourselves whether partisan lines or personal differences are more important than the destruction of OUR Country.

Try actually READING the dayum articles, sort the wheat from the chaff, and after the article sinks in, write to your pluckin' congresscritter and tell him/her to get off their ass and WORK FOR US/USA.

Dayumit.

If we don't all get on the same side of this wagon and push in the same direction, there won't BE a USA the way it was before bush.

Dayum, people.

I'm saying you use all the words which were used to describe people who were anti war in Iraq, words used constantly by woever is in power to create a nationalistic fervour...your country, and so on... nationalism kills, always has. Them and us, good and evil. C'mon stand up, are you a True american or not... Anyone who chooses to behave in a particular way ONLY when it affects them directly, might bring about a change, but it will be short lived and sooner than we think, things will revert, because if it isn't about "me"... it doesn't matter.A nation that

Have you visited with your Senators or Congressmen, have you suggested tot hem you will start collecting signatures on a petition, to take it nationwide to present millions of signatures to your press, your government?

I understand your passion, and merely observe that sometimes, if we squint a little it's hard to tell one "side" from another from the rhetoric.

Hi, A.C. 45359, and thanks.

I understand your cynical attitude, it happens to me, often.

I'll be dayumed if I know what will wake people up to the truth of what is happening in the here and now.

It's almost as though reality is suspended for some of these posters, and since GLP IS a microcosim of the attitudes across this land, the lack of outrage, the lack of motivation, the lack of intelligent discussion, behooves me.

Have we all been infected with an apathy "virus", have we breathed deeply of an airborne "I don't care" drug? It almost seems as though people DON'T care about the course of our nation, they don't care what type of country or world we're leaving for our children anymore.

There are few rare sparks of interest, a few people who see beyond the veil of spin doctoring, but the majority seem to be in a sort of suspended animation where reality and the future are of no interest.

THAT's what's really scarey.

I believe you are wrong--All this uproar is grinding Bush and his peoples agenda to a halt--If the house and senate elections result in one or both the of those groups going Democrat then the Republican stranglehold will be over and then the real struggle will begin.

The only thing that Bush has accomplished in the last few weeks ,with all his appearances, explanations and his back tracking is that he is confusing people and causing more doubt.

This Aura of a strong leader has turned more to an unsure Headstrong person who is under fire, making excuses for his actions.

Nothing on the horizon can save him...except...... and that is scary!!!

Sophia, if you knew me in the real world you'd know that I've carried a banner on more issues than I can remember right now. I've worked, sometimes, to exhaustion on campaigns and issues, and I carry some of that interest here to GLP.

Yeah, Sophia, I've been in contact with my congresscritters, many times.

There exists a fountain in Versailles, France which is stocked with carp. Being extremely lazy fish, the French decided in order to keep the carp active, they would add one pike to the fountain.

All the pike does is bite the rear end of the carp every so often.

We each have to be like that pike and keep the inactive or inattentive Americans awake and aware.
