In google earth, there is only one shot unfortunately, and no timeslider function. 0°39'20.79"N 112°56'18.76"W Quite a few other volcanos, and all these wierd gauges in the soil too. A very.. contrasting landscape. The ones near by, Olympus Mons, is kind of the opposite of this one. It has a round plateau poking up. Will put on my thinking cap. EDIT - to add, the G/E shots of this area must be during the Martian summer, as there is no snow about at all, or very little of it. Changes what you are looking at. |

How the hell was this formed on Mars? Why do planets have these sink holes appearing?? Why are most of them neat perfect circles?? |

Utapau was the homeworld of the Pau'ans and the Utai, more commonly referred to collectively as Utapauns. The hole appears to be an opening to an underground cavern, partly illuminated on the image right. Analysis of this and follow-up images revealed the opening to be about 35 meters across, while the interior shadow angle indicates that the underlying cavern is roughly 20 meters deep. Why there is a circular crater surrounding this hole remains a topic of speculation, as is the full extent of the underlying cavern. Holes such as this are of particular interest because their interior caves are relatively protected from the harsh surface of Mars, making them relatively good candidates to contain Martian life. The darker part is called a shadow. Its not emitting light, its reflecting light back. That is how its supposed to work don't ya know. Its probably "round" because the roof of the cavern fell in. We have the same types of situations on earth.. I dunno what the big mystery is supposed to be? |
