If this were true wouldn't it make more sense to have the products fail AFTER the warranty expires, that way the manufacturer is not on the hook for the cost of the repair?

3 of my $50 LED bulbs did not last a month. Good thing is that there is a 5 year warranty on them so I just keep replacing them when they die.

My Dad passed a few years ago and I had to go back to Wisconsin to prepare the old farm (my grandfather's since 1939) to sell. I had to clean out the old barn that had both my dad's and grandfather's tools. TONS of old tools. Even from my great grandfather who was a blacksmith around the turn of the century.

EVERYTHING, every tool I found was heavy as hell and still in perfect condition. I kept most of the stuff. From old mechanics tools to farm and garden tools, blacksmith tools, railroad tools, old tool cabinets etc. That stuff is tough! It'll last forever and and that's how long I'm keeping it.

There was a reason why they were handling Fukushima this way. and US may be the part of it.

Thats changing , internal consumption is forcing companies that don't make good products to the wall, consumers here vote with their cash, its the overseas companies (and greed too), that don't do quality control that encourage this
