Well, I'm not the random person's mother, I'm not their consoler, and I'm not them. Only the individual can find happiness within themselves, I can't artificially create it for them. I have other things to do.

Mind you in my day job I take care of the downtrodden, but if it's taught me anything it is that I can put a roof over someone's head but I cannot make them take care of it, keep it, or feel as if it is theirs; that's something that has to come from within them...not from me. When they are really ready to feel love, to keep a home, whatever it may be...then they will reach out and work for it on their own.

I have concluded its always been this way.People just hid it more in the past and now they just dont care if you see it.Sometimes we tend to only see the good in someone when in truth they have been a real jerk in life always.But because we cared about them we chose not to see it.I had to face that fact about my brother recently.Always built him up into an almost hero in my mind but then things happened that I had to see him for what he really was.Then you start reflecting backward and the evil was there all the time and you start recalling all the not so nice things and realize you just chose not to see the bad.
Anymore its all about being self centered.If there is nothing in it for them then they wont be there...and yes it is sad.

I see ppl act somewhat nicely, but the evil shines through. At the first excuse that allows them to be assholes, they go for it.

I've always treated others with respect and it's not my nature to step on ppl. Maybe guys like me are wrong, maybe humans are evil and should be evil, and maybe tptb are right behaving the way they do. But that would make us losers, right? Until we get on the bs train as well, and start abusing others for cash.

Maybe we sell the hope of good to others. Because even though they're evil they entertain the idea of a better world and a better them?

I go out of my way to help people (time and money) all the time. Even so, people rarely ever do anything truly kind... even those who I have helped. One example is a person I have helped who professes gratitude. I asked the person to see a movie with me (I was going to pay for it). The person was not even interested in hanging out with me for 90 minutes.

Exactly, everyone has evil in him, the only difference is some embrace it and some feel they would be better without it and at least try to suppress it or get rid of it.

I was selling a cheap apartment and moving to another country like 10 years ago. Everybody was after this apartment, but I thought I would give it to somebody that would appreciate it. I went online and found a young couple that couldn't get a place to live, so I offered it to them. Surely they would appreciate my help and I would have helped somebody that needed it. After we signed the papers the guy said: "you just lost an apartment!". Implying I was stupid for helping them. I'll never forget that.

Yeah, you run into that from time to time. I once sponsered a poor single mom and her three kids for Christmas. I bought them pretty much everything on their Christmas list and also a load of groceries. When I met with her to give her everything, she took it all quickly without even a thank you and drove off. Not that I expected her to break down in gratitude or anything, but expressing a little thanks would have been nice after spending a thousand bucks on her.

It seems like most people are always calculating the cost to them (time or money). They'll make a big deal out of taking 3 minutes to buy you a .49 cent cheeseburger... but you give them $5,000 and 300 hours of your life and they are like 'want can you do for me next'?

Move to Ireland. I did. People are still helpful and friendly; great community spirit. Don't know if they'd change if they were swamped with immigrants though. But right now it's a great place with lovely people. Not much money around but still happy!

Nice is what you are in the office, workplace, grocery store, etc. Nice is civil and is expected of us.

Kindness is being nice to people when they don't deserve it.
