Strange Comet in Western Sky Sunset on 7-23-12
I was watching the sunset and noticed, what looked like two comets or asteroids, right at sunset. Not really moving but disappeared due to earths rotation. Should be visible now in the western states. One seemes to be moving west and one moving north.

Anyone else?

how many degrees from the sun itself would you say it was ? And which directions left or right when looking at the sun? I will try to get a view tomorrow to late tonight.

Peace

Almost due west, for the one heading west, into the sunset. The second one was moving north, in a position 12 degrees north of the setting sun.

They were almost, if not completely stationary.

They were white at the center and left a white plume behind. I got my binoculars out and they had a very bright "head" surrounded by white contrails, that extended back about 8 degrees.

I first noticed it when I was firing up the backyard grill, but I thought it was a jet. Then about 20 minutes later I looked up and it was in the same spot. So, I went out to the front yard right after the sun had set and noticed the second one, in a north position from the sun.

Re: Strange Comet in Western Sky Sunset on 7-23-12
I have an update on this. I was outside on 7-24-12, at about the same time and saw the comet again. This time it was quite smaller and less bright. I caught it in my binoculars, at about 7:40 PM CDT. At my latitude, 34.15 degrees N, it was headed west, about 10 degrees north of West.

I managed to get my telescope out and focused on this, and it was spectacular, with a "winged" plume.

An internet search, finally revealed that it was Comet Macholtz. It has been visible for several days and maybe a few more. One guy on YouTube caught it in SOHO.

If you want to observe, get out about 30 minutes before sunset and look 30 to 45 degrees up from the horizon. You will have to be careful to locate it, but when you do, you can get youir binocs or telescope focused on it. You'll have about 45 minutes of visibility, max.

If you look west during the evening, Saturn and Mars are making appearances, and some other planet if I recall.. Saturn is rather bright, or was last I checked. Dunno if that helps but there ya have it

Re: Strange Comet in Western Sky Sunset on 7-23-12
Update from evening of 7-25-12: This evening I was viewing the sky, in the same area. This time I saw 3 separate comets/asteroids, in the same position in the sky, as the previous two evenings. No, they weren't planets, as I have noted the position of them. Also I had two other people with me and we all saw the same thing.

These comets/asteroids are out there in quantity. I am not trying to prove to anyone their existence, but I am trying to get others to observe and verify. Two of these comets/asteroids were so close that I could view them, at the same time without moving my binoculars.

I am curious why there are comets out there, in quantity, but yet none of the space agencies or astronomers are posting anything as to their origins, trajectories, etc.

I am hereby calling in SpaceMutt. Hello.....SpaceMutt come in please!

Ok ICE, according to your own post, Venus sets at 8:30 TWO HOURS after sun set, here in Wisconsin. Do you not understand this obvious discrepancy??? The object was ABSOLUTELY GONE BY 7 P.M. MERE MINS(15-25) AFTER SUN SET, NOT TWO FREAKING HOURS WHEN IT WAS COMPLETELY DARK, AND HAD BEEN DARK FOR WELL OVER AN HOUR

Re: Strange Comet in Western Sky Sunset on 7-23-12
I do believe that I may have actually been seeing this thing, whatever it is, since April, 2013. In fact, I've seen this thing now three or four times, always after getting out of work, which is usually at about 7:00 PM Central Standard Time, right around sunset. I would always see this thing while driving West or looking towards the West, and I actually recorded it back on 04/04/2013 and posted a video of it on my YouTube channel at RespectTheVessel to see if anybody else knew what it was.

Here is the link to my video: [link to www.youtube.com]

Now, every time I see this thing, it looks like it is in 'free fall' and not flying like a jet. It is also always moving down in the sky, either straight down or at an angle, but never upwards or sideways. Also, every time I've seen it, it has appeared white to my naked eye. It looks like it has a head to it with two trails coming off each side, almost like a double-tailed comet.

I have witnessed this strange thing, which doesn't look like any planes I see (and I see a lot of planes around here in central Wisconsin, too), go behind clouds way off in the distance, but I always thought it was within our atmosphere, not outside of it. I will let you guys watch the video and see for yourselves: [link to www.youtube.com]

First 46 seconds were some shitty video I shot out the window of my car (I was watching the road, just had my camera pointed to the West) in a desperate attempt to record it, since I didn't know how fast it was moving. At the 47 mark I am parked in a Fleet Farm parking lot and doing some zooming in and zooming out on the thing.
