Hospital record sees 44 babies in 43 hours

IT was even more than the stork could manage on its own, when a record 44 babies were delivered in 43 hours at Mercy Hospital for Women this week.

It was the emergency scenario they had been planning for, with midwives and obstetricians tag-teaming between nine birthing suites to deliver 22 boys and 22 girls across Monday and Tuesday.

incredibly - given most were spontaneous labours - the births rolled out one after the other.

"We were lucky in the timing - it was beautiful," Ms Walsh said.

"As soon as one had delivered and we could get them up to recovery, there was another woman ready waiting in the wings."

Much quieter and less explosive than CME's, the solar wind nonetheless displays a complex and dynamic flow. For example, as high speed solar winds course off the sun, they can over take slower winds, and create shock waves to form giant, spinning eddies known as co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) and these CIRs are an important component in accelerating particles.

Higher energy particles, known as solar energetic particles or SEPs, come from the sun, driven by fast CMEs and solar flares. These solar eruptions create what's called interplanetary shocks - much like a bow shock from a plane - that force the particles ever faster through space.

ACE science has also gone beyond the heliosphere. By observing galactic cosmic rays, the spacecraft has also advanced astrophysics understanding of how elements are created in supernovae. It is known that the intense heat from a supernovae - the giant explosion at the end of a star's life - fuses smaller elements into larger ones.

The makeup of cosmic rays suggest that most of them come from the concentrations of massive stars in certain areas, galactic superbubbles, which are regions where many supernovae explode within a few million years. Recent observations of a cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays in the Cygnus superbubble by the Fermi gamma-ray observatory support this theory.

Time capsule from 1960s unearthed in Anchorage windstorm

The high winds that rocked Anchorage Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning wreaked havoc across the city. The storm closed public schools, two universities, and even a military installation.

It knocked out power to as many as 60,000 customers. It blew down numerous trees, and one beloved landmark, the 103-foot-tall Sitka Spruce flagpole in downtown Anchorage.

When local photographer Charles Tice heard about the landmark, he knew he had to go see for himself and to try to capture the scene. He knew that because he had recently heard about a tradition of soldiers putting items inside the globes — or “trucks” — out of which the flags arise. A gun, he had heard, in case a foreign power was invading and a soldier needed to do something quick, and matches so a flag can be disposed of properly.

He has since been told that’s just lore, but he was still intrigued.

The humongous pole was on the ground, and the flag was gone. Something lying there, however, caught his eye.

“When I saw the old coffee can, I knew that it was a time capsule,” he said.

“I’ve looked up at the flagpole and wondered if that coffee can was still in there,” said 78-year-old Gillick, who spoke to Alaska Dispatch from his home in Soldotna. “I wondered if anybody would ever find it,” he said.

Only a handful of people knew about the can, he said. His own wife didn’t even know. “It was our secret. We thought we were pretty clever for thinking it up.”

Here’s how the can got there: In 1961, Gillick was in the U.S. Army, working for the Alaska Communications System, which then was the only communication system in Alaska and run by the military. He was also a volunteer fireman at the downtown station on Fourth Avenue. The stainless steel globe adorned with copper land masses, which had been painstakingly welded by volunteers at the Alaska Plumbing and Heating in downtown Anchorage

So they wrote a list of the people at the station on that day of May 7, 1961, including the volunteers.

But it’s clear that there were 12 of them in all that day. Among them was Chief William McNutt, whose nickname was “McNasty.” (Not because he was nasty, but it was just too hard to resist,

The feminine goddess par excellence in ancient Egypt, Hathor was a pre-Dynastic goddess who gained enormous popularity early on. Her name is translated as "the House of Horus", which may be a reference to her as the embodiment of the sky in her role of the Celestial Cow, being that which surrounds the decidedly sky-oriented hawk-deity, Horus, when he takes wing.

If Horus was the god associated with the living king, Hathor was the god associated with the living queen.

Hathor, as the Eye of Ra, "becomes" Sakhmet in the story "The Destruction of Mankind". Engraved into one of the shrines of Tutankhamen's tomb, the story tells how Hathor, at the request of her father (Ra), turns into Sakhmet in order to punish humans for transgressing against him. When she nearly wipes out all of humanity, Ra tries to stop her and, failing in that, contrives to get her drunk, whereupon she immediately forgets what it was she was doing and goes back to being Hathor.

"The Distant Goddess", tells of how Hathor became angry with Ra and wandered away from Egypt. Great sadness falls over the land and Ra, lost without his Eye, decides to fetch her back. However, Hathor has now become a deadly wild cat who destroys all that approaches her, and so no man or god will volunteer to go get her.

Thoth eventually agrees to lure her back and, dressed in disguise, manages to coax the angry goddess to return to Egypt by telling her stories. Back in her homeland, she bathes in the Nile and once again settles into her normally gentle demeanor, but not before the waters turn red from the effort of cooling her rage.

Hathor is also known as the "Lady to the Limit" ("limit" meaning the edges of the known universe) and the "Lady of the West"; her image is sometimes seen on funerary depiction as she stands behind Osiris, welcoming the dead to their new home.

The Greeks called Hathor by the name of their goddess, Aphrodite

Stockpiling. Preparing for the future. Caring about our children. Storage. Hoarding. Nourishing future generations. Challenging others. Hard work. Planning ahead. Doing what is right. Teamwork. Determination. Storing energy. Causes.

Australia has a very diverse number of ant species (over 1000), and many more are expected to be confirmed over time. Ants are social insects, forming colonies that can become incredibly huge and complicated.

Most of them feature an egg-laying queen, sterile workers and occasionally males and winged queens that help to sustain and create new colonies. Ants are primarily liquid feeders, and are known to farm the waste product from aphids (a form of liquid sugar) for food.

There is an importance in learning how to store energy, at this time. It might be learning how to literally store energy (through using techniques like qi gong, or meditative exercises).

It's important to be determined to see your goals through; no matter what they are, or how unfeasible they seem.

Ant asks us to consider 'doing what is right.' This means not only doing what is right for us, but also looking at what services we can offer to enrich our community and family. Communal ant works towards an idea of a greater good, which is sustaining and nourishing its community so that it - in turn - may be protected by its community.

It is through a healthy community that many species of ant thrive; and ant brings this to our attention.

One of the reasons why ant can be such a challenging guide (even when it isn't in its shadow aspect), is because when we honestly look at the kind of future our community is creating, we know that we (as a collective society) are not best serving future generations. Many of our lifestyles are geared towards immediate gratification and a consequence of this is wastage and environmental degradation. With the lives many of us lead, we are actively damaging the concept of a future for ourselves.

Ant challenges us, and then tells us to challenge others in turn. Sometimes it is important to educate others by challenging their currently held beliefs, asking them if they honestly believe they are doing the right thing, and of course; leading by example.

Like all animal helpers, this animal will only appear when right and appropriate, and cannot be forced to visit you, commune with you, or share messages with you. Ant is often a very visible guide, in that it will bite you or literally come into your life to get your attention. However, the messages that ant brings can be cryptic.

For those who find that ant energy is in their lives, there is emphasis on caring for children, or alternatively focusing on ways to best nourish future generations. Can we assure them shelter? Sustenance? A community that will protect them, that they in turn can protect?
