Super trawler banned from fishing in Australian waters

The controversial FV Abel Tasman super trawler will be banned from fishing in Australian waters for up to two years while further scientific assessments of its environmental impact are carried out.

And the federal government will carry out a ''root and branch review'' of fisheries management law in response to concerns about the 18,000-tonne fish quota given by fisheries authorities to the operator of the 142-metre, Dutch-owned ship.

There has never been a fishing vessel of this capacity in Australia before

The super trawler is docked at Port Lincoln in South Australia and was poised to start fishing within days. (suck fucken shit you bastards)

Queensland in federal brawl over mining taxes

A fight is brewing between the Federal Government and Queensland over mining royalties, with the Commonwealth threatening to cut infrastructure spending.

Queensland's LNP Government yesterday announced plans to increase coal mining royalties, a move which it predicts will raise $1.6 billion over four years.

The move threatens to blow a hole in the federal budget because the Commonwealth has agreed to refund state royalty charges as part of the mining tax package.

A recent study of gamma-ray bursts by Professor Robert Nemiroff and his colleagues at Michigan Technological University provides the first strong evidence concerning the small-scale smoothness of spacetime. Oddly, this examination of the very small is accomplished by measuring a handful of gamma-rays after they traveled over ten billion light years.

Quantum foam is a conceptual description of how spacetime may appear on the smallest length scales – far smaller than elementary particles.

From quantum mechanics comes the idea of virtual particles, which are massive particles that can appear for a time short enough that the uncertainty principle prevents our seeing them.

In relativity, however, mass (including virtual mass) curves spacetime.

Accordingly, when a virtual particle appears, the curvature of spacetime changes.

More massive virtual particles are restricted to smaller volumes of spacetime, as they appear for a time that becomes smaller as the particles become more massive, and even virtual particles can't travel faster than light. Eventually, as the mass of a virtual particle increases, it is located in a region small enough that it forms a tiny black hole. This occurs for a mass of about ten micrograms.

At this point, spacetime is filled with fluctuating regions of curvature that come and go very rapidly. On our scale, all this activity averages out to appear like a slightly curved sheet of paper.

At present, our instruments can at best examine structures a hundred thousand trillion times larger than the quantum scale – a difference so vast that detecting the quantum foam has been thought to be impossible, or at least impossibly difficult.

But what if the quantum foam has side effects that can be detected?

Not exactly. Sometimes passions get out of control, especially when they're fueled by the power and influence of a destructive cosmic entity.

This is what's happening in the current Marvel event miniseries "Avengers Vs X-Men" by an all-star team of Marvel creators, where five members of the X-Men became avatars of the entity known as Phoenix.

There seem to be two classic types of stories where Marvel super heroes clash. One is where the heroes go to war with each other and the other is where there are misunderstandings and clashes, but end with the combatants teaming up to fight a greater menace.

JUDY TUIFANGALOKA was only nine when she was wrongly detained at Villawood for nine months. Now it has been recommended she be given $250,000 in compensation.

During her detention in 2004, she saw other detainees hurt themselves. Rats ran amok in the complex.

The girl was detained with her Tongan mother after immigration officers unlawfully cancelled their visas. Earlier that year, Miss Tuifangaloka's father, Siaosi Taufa, had been removed from Australia despite holding a valid visa.
