Assange gets an Aboriginal passport

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been offered an Aboriginal Nations passport in an inner-city Sydney ceremony after he was "abandoned" by Australian authorities.

His father, John Shipton, accepted the document at a celebration in Darlington today.

"Julian has always expressed the desire that the Aboriginal people of Australia be recognised as sovereign," he said.

"It is a point of view that is becoming more accepted."

Protests Erupt in Beijing Over Disputed Islands

BEIJING—Several thousand protesters pelted Japan's embassy in Beijing with eggs and plastic bottles, and crowds attacked a Japanese-owned department store in central China, as popular anger escalated over Tokyo's plans to purchase contested islands in the East China Sea

"Smash Japanese imperialism," the protesters chanted as they marched through the embassy district.

In Changsha, capital of the central province of Hunan, photos posted to popular online forums showed smashed police cars as well as a fire outside a shopping center owned by Japanese retail chain Heiwado.

One photo showed a man smashing the window of a Rolex store using a long bar.

Bare-chested protesters outside the emporium pumped their fists into the air.

The state-run Xinhua news agency confirmed protests occurred in the southern city of Guangzhou, near Hong Kong, as well as in the smaller cities of Changsha, Zhengzhou, Kunming and elsewhere.

"The Japanese dogs must be extinguished," read one sign, posted to the window of one restaurant near the embassy.

Monster Typhoon Bears Down On Japanese Coast; Life-Threatening Conditions Expected in Areas of Japan & South Korea

Sanba, the monster storm system that was designated a super-typhoon on Friday has been downgraded to Typhoon status as of Saturday afternoon but is still expected to cause life-threatening conditions as it bears down on Okinawa, Japan and Japan's Ryukyu Islands Saturday night and on into Sunday.

Weather experts forecast that Sanba will be packing Category 3-equivalent maximum sustained winds of 127 miles per hour with gusts up to 155 miles per hour as it crosses Okinawa in less than 24 hours. The storm is currently moving north-northwest in the Pacific Ocean at approximately 13 miles per hour.

The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of World War II. The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945.

Kiwi helps find Asian monster volcano

A Kiwi scientist has helped discover a monster volcano under Hong Kong.

Its prehistoric eruption has been linked to a dinosaur extinction event.

The world has only about 50 known "supervolcanoes" on the scale of the one Dr Roderick Sewell and his team uncovered.

And what is now known as the High Island Supervolcano has changed ideas about what formed Hong Kong's unique landscape.

Geologists previously thought the area's geography was created by a series of eruptions, rather than one super-sized, catastrophic event 140 million years ago.
