"Turks" came from central asia and have Mongolian origins. Whilst on holiday in Turkey I found out the origin of the blue "evil" eye that people put on their homes and businesses.
When the Turks first migrated into he land we now know as Turkey they found a fair-haired and fair-skinned people living there.
As the Turks had never seen blue eyes before they were quite stunned and scared by them and believed people with blue eyes had magic powers hence the reason for those pendants you see in Turkey.
So no the dark-skinned and black haired Turks you see today have central asian roots, having said that if you vist places in Western Turkey such as Izmir you will see many "white" people even with red hair.

These POWs mostly had been captured from Turkey in the big sea battle for Malta in 1575. These muslim turks went inland up the rivers to the southeastern mountains and intermarried with the Cherokee..............this was four times as many people and 40 years before the Mayflower

a lot of these "hillbillys" are dark skinned thin people often with very blue eyes......very different from the Scots/Irish that later started to come into these mountains in the mid to late 1700s

Turks were originally Mongoloid. Look at the people of Central Asia today who were the original Turks. Turkish leaders led small groups of Turkish men into what is now Turkey. They bred with the Byzantine women there. There were red haired blue eyed people in Turkey mostly in Galatia which was settled by celts in the 3rd Century BC. (galatia is the same as Gaul, Gael, Galway, Galicia btw)

Greeks and ancient Anatolians likely had dark features, though there's little evidence. A good source for individual portraits which comes to mind are the portraits on mummy caskets made for Greeks living in Egypt during Roman times. Almond eyes, dark or brown curly hair for the most part. The kind we take to be "Mediterranean."

Turks are NOT Mongolians. They're Turkic in origin, part of a larger group originating in central Asia between the Caspian Sea and China. If you go to places in Afghanistan and Western China you can see people who are blonde with blue eyes, whose ancestors have lived in the highlands uninterrupted for thousands of years.

There's also been a ton of ethnic intermixing among Turks, Greeks, Slavs, Caucasians and everything else for the last thousand or so years. Please don't use this to apply your racial prejudice.

None of that mumbo jumbo about those dark skinned, blue eyed, straight haired Appalachian white folks is true. DNA has conclusively proved that the Melungeon's Turkish sailor origin is just a myth. They are absolutely the progeny of multi-generational mulattoes, specifically of a strong African male line intermixed with an Irish female line with some native American in minor degrees. Also, you are mistaken in that they were assumed to be of Turkish descent, as the regional folks always claimed to be of Portuguese descent via shipwrecked pirates or sailors. That myth was also proven false by DNA analysis of the main 20 families claiming to be Melungeon original clan lines.

Furthermore, at LEAST one in six Southern whites with ancestry present before the Civil War and especially the American Revolution has discernible African ancestry via race-mixing in the 1500s-1800s. It was so common that Virgina colonial governors passed an anti-miscegenation law in the late 1600s. The indentured white Irish women were so looked down upon that they turned to freed mulatto and African slave men for marriage because of the shortage of available white men of similar social caste. British didn't look highly upon the Irish, remember? The British turned a blind eye because the mulattoes were favored for domesticated duties over the field negroes straight from Africa.

These Melungeons and faux Indian tribes claim any ethnicity BUT African to explain their olive complexions and coarse hair textures when the inevitable "throwback" baby arrives looking blacker than most. Lumbee Indians in the Carolinas are especially guilty of this.

Yes, Elvis, Burt, Johnny Depp, Fiona Apple and a few other famous folks of Appalachian descent are walking examples of what having 1/32 or 1/64 or 1/128th parts African ancestry looks like.
