It came from the South. It is likely Palanga.

Do these sudden wind gusts happen often in this area?

Yesterday there was record high temperature, a good time to be near the sea, which ended like this. It is unusual.

Curonian Lagoon near Klaipeda harbor. Less severe as it is proteced by Curonian Spit. Storm lasted nearly half an hour.

There was complete panic on the shore. Kids up to 4 years were knocked down by the wind and started rolling from it. Witness was talking about baby carriage lifted up and hitting sandhill.

There are injuries and fatalities.

There were two warnings in advance from weather service, strong wind and extreme temperature. It did happen unusually sudden and people were caught by surprise.

Looks like the derecho storm the east coast had a few weeks ago.

Weather is not the same as it used to be. It was not unusual to go and look at the sea during storm. There are no big storms in Batlic sea and everyone knew that. This sudden event changes understanding what you might expect from nature.

It looks like derecho. Strong wind lasted for 10-30min and was from one direction traveling with cold weather. No confirmation from MSM. Didn't look at the radar during this event, but did witness it. It was not so strong here as it was near seaside and lots of dust followed it.

Storm in Klaipeda. Garbage containers on the street turned upside down, garbage still flying in the air.

The first was hit resort town Nida, then it travelled north towards Smiltyne (Curonian spit near Klaipeda). Beach patrol in Palanga was informed about incoming storm and they started calling everyone to stay away from the water, but soon it was not needed as everyone saw the storm approaching.
7000 lost electricity. News about this event are still comming in.
Now army is involved in clearing the roads near Nida.

Wind speed in Nida was 37m/s (133km/h, 83mph), in Klaipeda harbor 30m/s (108km/h, 67mph). No data about wind near sea.

There still is no data about outcome. One source tells 12 injuries in Smiltyne alone, another at least 8 people in whole Curonian Spit and Klaipeda. Luckily there may be no fatalities (after source checking) only several serious injuries.

Maybe information about these types of storm events will help to warn others in your area to prevent catastrophe in the future.

That's a good link! It starts to make more sense. That storm made a lot of damage. Possibly the first of this kind and scale in a recorded weather history (since 1770). Maybe someone will review and make public more historical records (most events were local). Entire forests were laid down during that event. It happened at night and it saved from more casualties.
Authorities responded with new weather radar. Hoping that they will provide more information about this storm.

Looks like MSM lost interest in this event as last signs of it are being fixed.
Articles are appearing about dramatic stories or events. One is about parachute jumper near Marijampole. He jumped off the plane and while gliding with parachute, got caught in a storm and was severely injured. It is interesting that neither pilot or anyone in airport did not see any signs of storm before jump. Victim had a count of 800 prior jumps which is not a small number.
It was sudden.

we also had a storm the winds were crazy it picked up a baby/little kid off the ground 2ft

damn! looks like the freak south storms we had some weeks ago - really hot day, no wind, and then bam! a freakish wind turning everything upside down!

not the first time it happens here, always with south winds, coming in from africa.
