Xannixon (OP) User ID: 1676485 United States 08/02/2012 12:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Uber Rich have already pulled their money out. You know, they will buy back in after the slide. The market is heading toward a correction, its overbought. It should be around 10,000, even if there is no doom, so its not hard to believe any bad news will send it spiraling. Last Edited by Hamburgerwagon on 08/02/2012 12:36 PM |

Xannixon (OP) User ID: 1676485 United States 08/02/2012 01:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This all started at the closing bell on Tuesday. The doom death spiral is on. The world economy is held together by band-aids and chewing gum. Any bad news and the chain reaction will start. Thats why the automated trading systems are off now, they dont want it to trigger earlier than they want it. |

[link to www.netdania.com] -172 on the dow Actually, I am generally not apocalyptic regarding the markets, although I am a cyclical bear these days However, the OP could be onto something: As a result of the Knight enormous software "bug", volume in the markets (already thin in recent weeks) has been very low, and there may be some restrictiosn on HFT (high frequency trading). Yesterday, word was that many transactions were being done manually, and the usual algos used by Knight and other market makers had been disabled The majority of the market has been HFT in recent years, since real human traders have been pushed out of the market. More worrisome is that the HFT funds have walked up many stocks on low volume In other words: there is a pocket of air between perceived demand and actual demand in many cases. If any number of large sell orders were to hit the bid at the same time, we could see a large drop because the bid support, in many cases, is fictional There is a reason why Zerohedge calls a number of stocks, including AAPL "hedge fund motels" If more than a few large positions were to attempt to exit at the same time, given the large number of funds already fullyl positioned in that stock, it could probably drop $100 or more fairly quickly (1-2 days). Whether it continued to fall would depend on what the media and officials would do to jawbone it higher or action taken to create confidence Other, less liquid stocks could fall even faster Any kind of dislocation in market making is a serious issue, which is why I posted the Knight problems as soon as I saw them. There is much doom talked about which is possible, but rarely if ever would happen. Market making doom seems kind of bland, but trust me, it can unwind the markets faster than any headline or other feared event. Think Flash Crash... But to temper this scenario, the likelihood is that if markets fell and there were systemic issues that serious, the SEC would step in to halt trading across the board. They did that twice already in Russia, it could well happen here and/or in Europe and the UK. Of course that would do notthing for confidence, but it would prevent the paper losses which our leaders seem so afraid of. So, there is little risk of a one day collapse in stocks, as the PTB would intervene to halt trading and attempt to ensure an "orderly" market (as they like to say) But over the following weeks, we could see steady exits, because there is nothing right now to inspire anyone with a brain to buy the dips. There are many reasons why confidence in the markets is slim to gone, and why we could lose 500 -1000 points, unless something extraordinary happens within weeks to create a change in attitude. I would have to see much worse to think of a 3000 drop, but having lived through the fall of 2008, anything is certainly possible , especially if there is a credit event as a result of a sovereign default in Europe Last Edited by Baltar on 08/02/2012 08:16 PM The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane. ~Marcus Aurelius |
