Very Rare 5.1 EQ Strikes Ross Sea, Antarctica, South Pole - The Last Earthquake = 10 YEARS AGO wasn't it the ross ice shelf at the beginning of "the day after tomorrow" that breaks apart? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19900897 Yep, your right.... In The Day After Tomorrow, the disaster threat du jour is Global Warming (tm). Dennis Quaid plays Jack Hall, the Chicken Little scientist who says that the sky is falling and who, of course, nobody listens to. After watching the Ross Ice Shelf crack and start to fall into the sea, he attends a climatology conference in New Delhi (experiencing a snowstorm) to say that ice melt from the polar ice caps may be flooding the North Atlantic with fresh water, potentially stopping the flow of the Gulf Stream. Ironic though it may sound, Global Warming could cause a new Ice Age. [link to bowjamesbow.ca] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21149316 I have been doing a bit on research to see if there is any history of big earthquakes like this further than 10 years...What did I find? NOTHING.... If you do some research yourself, googling Earthquake Ross Sea, there is only information relating to this quake. Also, there is a number of Google books and other articles that state that Earthquakes in the Ross sea/Ross Ice Shelf are very rare, unless there Ice Quakes, but will a Ice quake hit a mag of 5.1?? Here's a few links that say this or that it's unusual: Earthquakes within the interior of Antarctica are very rare [link to books.google.co.uk] [link to books.google.co.uk] [link to books.google.co.uk] Either way, the last earthquake to strike here was January 2002, in my eyes, it's very rare for earthquakes to strike here.... |

You just claimed to not be a big believer in the bible, but you quote a verse from the bible.. THEN you state that it happened 10 years ago... Whats so different now from then? Doesnt mean God is coming down or w/e.. On nearly all EQ threads on GLP you see that bible quote, so I just remembered it... There are ONLY 2 quakes listed that I can find for Ross Sea, there is no others as I've searched and found nothing. A 2.5 mag 10 years ago and a 5.1 now, I consider this to be a diverse place as EQs very rarely happen here. What's the difference now from then?? The magnitude of the quake is different, a 5.1 EQ happening at a spot that has only ever had one other EQ 10 years ago does make one wonder what the hell would of caused that... You got to think, this area is an Ice Shelf with high ice cliffs, also, there's this: NASA Researchers Find Snowmelt in Antarctica Creeping Inland On the world's coldest continent of Antarctica, the landscape is so vast and varied that only satellites can fully capture the extent of changes in the snow melting across its valleys, mountains, glaciers and ice shelves. In a new NASA study, researchers using 20 years of data from space-based sensors have confirmed that Antarctic snow is melting farther inland from the coast over time, melting at higher altitudes than ever and increasingly melting on Antarctica's largest ice shelf. Nevertheless, NASA researchers using data collected from 1987 to 2006 found snow melting in unlikely places in 2005: as far inland as 500 miles away from the Antarctic coast and as high as 1.2 miles above sea level in the Transantarctic Mountains. The 20-year data record was three times longer than previous studies and reaffirmed the extreme melting irregularity observed in 2005. During the same period, they also found that melting had increased on the Ross Ice Shelf, both in terms of the geographic area affected and the duration of increased melting across affected areas. "Persistent melting on the Ross Ice Shelf is something we should not lose sight of because of the ice shelf's role as a 'brake system' for glaciers," said Tedesco. "Ice shelves are thick ice masses covering coastal land with extended areas that float on the sea, keeping warmer marine air at a distance from glaciers and preventing a greater acceleration of melting. The Ross Ice Shelf acts like a freezer door, separating ice on the inside from warmer air on the outside. So the smaller that door becomes, the less effective it will be at protecting the ice inside from melting and escaping." [link to www.nasa.gov] |

Very Rare 5.1 EQ Strikes Ross Sea, Antarctica, South Pole - The Last Earthquake = 10 YEARS AGO It is not rare just because you get one every ten years, it happens, even in my area we have a quake probably once every ten years. The quake was near 200 MILES from the Ross Ice Shelf. It was a mere 5.1m quake. Glacial quakes happen a couple of times a day, some can give as much energy out as a 7 mag on the scale, do you see anything come of them? |

Very Rare 5.1 EQ Strikes Ross Sea, Antarctica, South Pole - The Last Earthquake = 10 YEARS AGO You stated VERY rare. You do realise that the USGS only shows earthquakes 4.5> outside of the U.S? You do realise that seismometers were only situated in the Ross Sea in 1999/2000? so any 'recorded' events are limited before that time. So although the USGS only show quakes of 4.5> it doesn't mean they are not happening! |
