The true first Americans, in this round of civilization, were the Celtics, the French, the Phoenicians, and Asians.

So, when we, as a multicultural nation celebrate, we are celebrating our nations first True Americans, which most of us are descendents of.

Most people only know the history (propaganda) presented in school text books. Too much has been lost already. I say with gratitude and respect that if I were Native American, I'd go to my elders and ask to learn the language, the songs, the ceremonies, the old ways of doing things. Times are going to change, and what they know, we'll all wish we knew!

Amen, Spyder, we still know how to live off the land, what wild plants to eat or not eat, and can function without the Gregorian Calendar (we have a 13 month sytem). and we haven't even asked the non-natives what are they gonna do when they pull the electric plug, and when there is no gas & oil ?

Re: Chief Joseph...Nez Perce
Chief Joseph tried every possible appeal to the federal authorities to return the Nez Perce to the land of their ancestors. In 1885, he was sent along with many of his band to a reservation in Washington where, according to the reservation doctor, he later died of a broken heart.

I have carried a heavy load on my back ever since I was a boy. I realized then that we could not hold our own with the white men. We were like deer. They were like grizzly bears. We had small country. Their country was large. We were contented to let things remain as the Great Spirit Chief made them. They were not, and would change the rivers and mountains if they did not suit them.

Re: Chief Joseph...Nez Perce
Hey In-Dn! Yeah, I've been thinking about that lately. More importantly, how can we learn to live off the land without destroying it? To live WITH the land and everyone else we share it with?

We don't have elders to learn that from. We have books and "experts", but no one to help us come back into relationship with it.

I'm grateful for what I've learned from Native American friends of mine about that.

To hell with technology, what we need is technoecology, Earth friendly Energy sources (solar, wind generators, and bio-diesel fuels). and the Earth isn't meant to be dominated by spiritual S&M, and we need to get back on the natural 13 month calendar. (there is no astronomical significance to January 1st, a totally manmade time reference.) and operate elections by proportional representation, instead of by the 2 party system, thus, taking away the powers from the Corpses (Corps.)and giving it back to the people.

Re: Chief Joseph...Nez Perce
As oil-based products and energy becomes more and more expensive, alternatives will take on more importance and more resources will go into them. Problem is, most manufacturing processes to create those alternatives are themselves oil-based. I also think that as shipping and travel becomes more expensive, more of people's lives will be local. More co-ops, etc.

That's where knowing the old ways of doing things would really help. Local trade in making things by hand.

i am all over new energy, well anything but oil that is, all electric is the way to go, it's obvious. i will grant that the "natives" were mistreated and stole from. lets not sit back and act like they were these peace loving, caring, open minded people that were savagly raped by the narrow minded "white" man. the natives were just as wicked in there own way. any may were "land" owners, that is not just a white man thing. what happened was wrong, but hate and fear from the past leads to more hate and fear, no answer and no solutions come of it. the youth of the "native" people move on and move up, vote, make changes, etc. jewish people have done it for like 5000 years, and so did the irish, the "britons", the scots, pretty much every people in the world.

I sort of see what you're saying Vox. Nobody has the corner on human "goodness" or "evil". A fellow I learned a lot from is a Chippewa-Cree Metis. He is a storyteller and has lots of stories from the pre-Christian European ancestors as well as the Indian ancestors of his people. It's amazing how those stories fit together. The same overrunning of earth based culture that happened here to the Native Americans happened 12 or so generations ago to the European earth people. The "dominance" culture did it to us all.

what denial, that every race has skeletons, that no one is perfect and focusing on race is part of the problem and not the solution. truly trying to "love" or "care" for all is the only way, to celebrate our unique attributes.

Mine, too In-Dn. But I truly think things are going to change. They have to. We can't keep eating up the earth like a cancer. I think that the transition out of oil will be hard, but will force some real positive change. I hope so, anyway.
