Anonymous Coward User ID: 18732095 ![]() 08/07/2012 04:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Actually if you look into it, this is old knowledge. In Colorado in the 50's I believe, they started pumping drain water down a long fissure miles deep underground, well all of the sudden plates started moving and there were earthquakes. Back in the 50's the scientists figured this out, I've pulled up the article a few years ago on Google. So to those in the know, this is old info. Extra fluid can cause earthquakes. |

Injection was commenced March 1962, and an unusual series of earthquakes erupted in the area shortly after. |

Quoting: teacup I think we have a massive price to pay for modern technology, not yet fully realised. If I remember correctly, somewhere around a 2-4 pointer, not the largest earthquake, but it was unexpected. Nobody thought you could "cause" an earthquake. Ever since I heard about that in school 20 years ago, I've been telling people that fracking would cause the same thing. Probably takes longer but its definitely going to happen. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 21455127 ![]() 08/07/2012 05:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep it's caused earthquakes in the UK as well. They also pump toxic fluid in the earth which spreads out and can get into the water table. Fracking is about the fucked up thing you can do to the earth besides stuff like mountain top removal for coal. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 19706474 ![]() 08/07/2012 05:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hydraulic fracturing may cause more earthquakes than previously thought, a new study of US gas drilling fields suggests. Quoting: teacup A panel of seismic experts decided it was "highly probable" that the company's drilling was responsible for two quakes and 28 aftershocks in Blackpool The "fracking" process involves injecting large volumes of water and chemicals underground to bring methane to the surface. It has long been associated with causing small underground tremors and occasionally with earthquakes that are noticed on the surface. But the new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found at least 59 minor quakes in the Barnett shale region in Texas, ranging from 1.4 to 2.5 in magnitude, that had not been reported to the US National Earthquake Information Centre. Read more: [link to www.smh.com.au] We've really screwed this earth up! For anyone who knows the area we have a Nuclear Plant just 30 miles up the coast. To allow fracking in this area is suicide to the area. |
