Quoting: Harmonix If you're clueless in a lot of other areas, pretty much just focusing in on your astronomy and failing to connect the dots, then why don't you go and lurk on some other site dealing with strictly astronomy with all the other astro-tards? Shut up you twat. You have no idea what is going on in the sky. Your just an average person that believes everything he sees on the internet. At least us being amateur astronomers, we understand what is going on in the sky. Maybe if you spend time learning about astronomy and not stupid bullshit, you will understand little kid. |
Reality42- User ID: 19327440 United States 08/09/2012 05:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Maybe this could be useful for both of you Quoting: pstrusi [link to en.wikipedia.org] Short answer: yes it was changed Short answer: No the Richter Magnitude Scale has not changed. You have provided a reference to the Moment Magnitude Scale. Two different, but related, things. Your link should have been: [link to en.wikipedia.org] which indicated no change in the Richter magnitude scale. You have to read with comprehension or you will fall into making erroneous conclusions. The Richter Scale is M or M(l). It has not changed. Some countries and agencies use M(l) as their reporting metric. The US transitioned to M(w) in the late '70s-early'80s for large EQs since it is more accurate as explained in your cited article. The two scales give similar results except for large quakes where M(w) is more accurate. It doesn't "downgrade" magnitudes by 1 as claimed. The relationship between M(l) and M(w) is complex and the difference between the 2 is all over the board from positive, to neutral, to negative. I recommend you go to the USGS site and download the "centennial catalog" to get an idea of the differences. In any event Richter Magnitude Scale has not changed. It is still in use and is essentially a calculation based on the movement of the needle of a standard siesmometer. Most EQ data at USGS is uniformly M(w) going back to the '70s (and before if you reference the centennial catalog) so strict comparisons can be made. R. I appreciate your explanation, however from a simple and humble point of view I have a doubt about your same words, I quote you: "The US transitioned to M(w) in the late '70s-early'80s for large EQs since it is more accurate as explained in your cited article. The two scales give similar results except for large quakes where M(w) is more accurate" Excuse me but those key words (in bold) mean: CHANGE for anyone who read. 1. Transition is change 2. Two scales, not one Anyway since I'm not a expert on these matters I have to know more. (I hate to leave a giant quote untrimmed but in this case the whole thing is needed if a reader is only reading this post.) Let me try an analogy and see if you understand what is going on here. I realize English isn't your primary language (if your country code is accurate) so that may be the problem. Analogy: In the US we use the Fahrenheit scale for temperature. Pretend that in 1980 agencies of the US switched to the Celsius scale. Now, along comes a kOOk in 2012 and starts screaming that the "US government has downgraded the Fahrenheit scale by 50° and are evil, mean, nasty minions of the Anunookie and Reptilian Galaactic Overlords. They are trying to hide dramatic increases in temperature!!!!!!!!!!" All sane people start scratching their heads and state, "They did no such thing. The Fahrenheit scale is the same as it ever was. The freezing point of water is still 32°F, the triple point is still 32.018°F, and the boiling point is still 212°F. What is this kOOk drooling on about now?" Now just substitute Richter Magnitude Scale and Moment Magnitude Scale for °F and °C in the above analogy. But... this is not exactly what is occurring. The EQ kOOks cite dates for this imaginary "downgrading of the Richter Scale" as anywhere from 1 year ago to 25 years ago with most saying it was sometime in the 2000's or maybe the 1990's at most. They don't even know about the transition from M(l) to M(w) that occurred in the early 1980's and most of the data available at the USGS site from the NEIC search going back to 1973 have been transitioned. I know they don't because I've asked them. Numerous times. And, as the cites in my earlier post show (particularly Wiki since most won't download a 100MB .pdf centennial catalog and actually read it) the difference in the two EQ scales isn't very great and is mostly to make EQs have a larger magnitude if only by ~0.30. In other words, if that is what they are unwittingly referring to, they are still wrong because the effect is the exact opposite of what they are claiming. The change is mostly to []bUPGRADE the magnitudes of EQs which would make current quakes seem larger than the same quake reported going back to 1973 and earlier. But the fact is, they are stating that the Richter Scale was downgraded by 1 point and that is a lie. It has not. Some local seismology networks in the US still report using the old, unchanged Richter Scale. The Richter Scale has NOT Changed. That is the bottom line. Just because they are too ignorant of the science which they are condemning doesn't make them correct... or sane. It happens with the fringy kOOks all the time. They're so dumb they don't know what they are talking about, but that doesn't stop them from babbling like cretins getting drool all over the floor and my monitor. It is Arrogant Ignorance. They are actually proud of being ignoramuses. Just look at some post directed at the "debunkers" where the kOOk will condemn the knowledge and education of the debunker and then proudly puff their chest out as they declare that they are unencumbered by the 'crutch' of knowledge and education. They're unknowledgeable, uneducated morons in the subject they are spewing about; and they are proud of it. The Richter Scale has not been changed. Period. I think I know how this got started and by whom, but I'm not sure so, unlike kOOks, I am not willing to accuse anyone of being a moronic, lying, disinfo agent who shouldn't be allowed to post on the internet if they are so dumb they can't comprehend what they are reading. Of course, if we were to prohibit dimwitted fringe cretins from posting their wouldn't be a fringe site left on the internet since they all seem to be suffering from microencephaly. You want opinions? Stick to politics, religion, social sciences. The hard science and math deal in facts. There are right answers and there are wrong answers. Only at the level of pre-hypothesis WAGing does opinion rear its head. That's why the 'Communications' majors, and Journalism majors, and Psychology majors, and PolySci majors, and high schoolers, etc. avoided these subjects. They couldn't bullshit their way through them and get patted on the head for an "interesting viewpoint" or a "wonderful contribution" or whatever even if what they've produced is pure drivel. In the sciences or math they'd be abject failures and that would bruise their poor little egos. 2+2=4 Angular momentum is conserved. Evolution is a fact. The speed of light in a vacuum is constant. The position and momentum of a particle cannot be exactly determined. We live in a probabilistic universe. Entropy is always increasing without the addition of energy. Always. etc., etc., etc. There are wrong answers. No opinions allowed. Get it? <rant off> R. |
