Anonymous Coward User ID: 3066087 United States 08/09/2012 12:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In our district 181 out of 430 students qualify for FREE lunch. We live in a predominately middle to upper-middle class part of town within walking distance of the school. There's no way those of us who live near the school would qualify. That number would be shocking without looking at other factors like..they bus in children from outlying areas that live closer to other schools that are more inner city. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 21231157 United States 08/09/2012 01:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Last year my husband was unemployed for a number of months and did not qualify for unemployment so we signed up for the food stamp program until he could find a job. This is not something we rushed into as an upper middle class family, the idea of "food stamps" was not something we wanted to be a part of...it was really our last resort. That said, as soon as we signed up for this, they put our children on the free lunch roles without our knowledge but when we found out, we were grateful for the extra financial relief. Then three months later, my husband found a good paying job and we immediately got off of the food stamp program! We notified our children's school that they were no longer to receive free lunches and sent lunch money with them every day after that. The school refused to accept their lunch money and refused to take them off the free lunch program! I was irate! We no longer qualified and did not want our children to benefit from something that we could now afford to pay for when so many other children were in need. The school told us why they refused to take our children off...they get government grant money for every child that is on the free/reduced lunch program. For us to insist that they REMOVE our children from this list was, to them, taking money out of their pockets! For the rest of the school year, we continued to send lunch money with our children and they continued to refuse it but at least our conscience is clear. This system is SO BROKE, it's not even funny!!!!!! |

This was before I learned about them being utter garbage. The school lunches are just absolutely terrible and not appealing. I ended up just bringing my own lunch to school. |

This system is SO BROKE, it's not even funny!!!!!! This is why the schools want students on FR lunches...no child left behind requires testing all students, and there is a percentage that has to be proficient. In the results there are smaller subgroups and if the subgroups fall below the mark, you lose. The categories include race-black, Asian, Pacific Islander, etc. then their are groups FR lunch and special ed. The economy has helped schools on their scores because families with children that normally excel are facing unemployment and qualify. FR lunches used to fail the tests, but now that all kinds of kids can be thrown in it's a gold mine. Teaching didn't improve, kids didnt learn more, but the school looks like they nailed it because FR scores went up. Schools aren't going to give that up. Yes, it's like cheating, kind of. |

I think there is 10k plus kids... Quoting: pop 1319684 It's big business for schools. I'm an administrator, you should see how many of those trays of food gets thrown away, but the kids still buy the snacks ala carte, at around $6 each meal. Get this, they must take the free tray first, then buy the overpriced ala carte. Required by law, they have to take the tray. Check our schools financials, you'll find cafeteria services are the area in the black. |

So along comes another kid, smart and hardworking and now FR, then the school stands a chance of bringing up one of the subcategories. |

SO, families in the category of working poor definitely qualify. Based on that so do almost all illegal immigrants and they are getting the free meals. Certainly, there is a lot of wasted food. However, the free breakfast and lunch is the only food some students get. |

Quoting: truz1980 Believe me, it's not out of the goodness of their hearts, put everybody on Free lunch and you don't take a hit. Low test scores means the district loses money. It's strategy, with tax money. That is why my kids are not part of the publc school system. |

All the way to the district superintendent they tried to force it. Guess they wanted to goose their stats for how their special ed. kids were doing. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 6383062 United States 08/09/2012 09:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was checking out the schools in my district on the National Center for School Statistics (link below) when I noticed that most of the schools in my area have students eligible for free or reduced lunches--as much as 75 percent of all students can receive free lunches! Now, to qualify for free or reduced lunches in my area, it's usually done by Welfare, who then notifies the schools that a student is eligible. I was quite shocked that the numbers were that high! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3738979 Use this link to find schools in your area: [link to nces.ed.gov] Under "Enrollment Characteristics" it will give you the number of students that can or are receiving free lunches, as well as reduced lunches. It will also give the number of boys and girls that attend the school. For example, one school (Pre-K through Kindergarten) that I looked at here has: Free lunch eligible: 130 Reduced-price lunch eligible: 22 Enrollment by Gender: Male: 158 Female: 130 Total students: 288 Free/reduced lunches: 152 That's well over half of all students and that school only holds 2 grades--pre-k and kindergarten. How does your district or schools compare? Is it that high as well? used the link amd 98% of the kids in my local public school are eligable for free or reduced lunch. |
