July 27, 2012 12:05 am BY PAUL HAMPEL AND VALERIE SCHREMP HAHN

FERGUSON A Ferguson resident has won a battle with city officials that could be considered a matter of taste.

The resident, Karl Tricamo, had been feuding with the city for months over the vegetable garden he had planted in front of his house in the 300 block of Louisa Avenue.

The city saw the garden as a blot on the landscape and issued Tricamo a citation demanding he uproot the corn, tomatoes, sorghum, peppers and other crops sprouting there and, instead, seed the yard for grass. The garden measures 35 feet by 25 feet.

With the help of an attorney from the Libertarian group Freedom Center of Missouri, Tricamo emerged victorious on Wednesday night when the city's Board of Adjustment voted to throw out the citation against him.

"We felt vindicated," said Tricamo, 29. "I had taken steps from day one that everything would be within ordinance. They just tried to throw everything at us and hoped something would stick."

Tricamo's attorney, Dave Roland, cast the issue as a blow against petty city tyranny.

"Gardening is part of the basis of human civilization," Roland said. "Is it unusual to have a garden in your front yard? Yes. But the city had no right to demand he remove it."

The board voted 4-1 in Tricamo's favor.

People should not be allowed to grow their own food especially in city gardens. They do not look nice next to manicured lawns. The vegetables will probably be polluted and not fit for human consumption. Worse is that if lots of people did it it would affect the employment of all sorts of people, and prevent money from circulating in the economy. He is affecting the supermarkets, the truckers who move the food around, the farmers and pickers. He is contributing to a cost rise for everyone, because eventually there will not need to be so much moved around, so it will cost more to deliver what is needed. Growing your own food is economic treason and treason against the people and it must be stamped out.

At this time there is an on going drought in the U.S. which is the cause of less vegetables surviving. The end result is higher food prices.

Your reasoning for not allowing personal gardens is so far off that you are in denial of what is really going to be the cause of higher food prices.

Another thing that you are wrong about is the personal gardeners food 'probably being polluted and not fit for human consumption' ... I personally would trust a personal garden over a corporate controlled agricultural farm because of the Monsanto pesticides that are used on them. The pesticides are also already in the seeds.

With that said, You need to get your head out of your ass and devote your time toward doing more research, before you open your mouth again.

Re: Man Fights to Grow Veggies in Front Yard AND WINS!
Don't get me wrong, I have a vegetable garden an 18 x 25 plot of land (450 square feet) of orderly rows and plantings. It is a 'farm' not an ornamental garden.

While a vegetable garden can look nice as a traditional veg garden, it is not the same thing as an ornamental garden, what is traditionally found in the front of a house.

If they really wanted to do this right, they would have used vegetables plants mixed in with companion plants like marigold, nasturtium and herbs and laid it all out as a flower garden.

Each time the 'front yard vegetable garden' is brought up as an 'eyesore' the owner has attempted to make a traditional vegetable garden with little to no heed of the rest of the community that they live in.

Tomatoes, eggplants, pole beans, bush beans, and a goodly many of the other typical veg one finds in a vegetable garden can be planted separately.

I have 10 tomato plants on my property. 4 are in the vegetable garden, the rest are set in flower beds and planted as much as decoration as for food. My front porch with the awning and posts flanking the walk was has sentinel tomatoes on each post surrounded by a bed of marigold and nasturtium. While the tomatoes are vegetables, they are being used a decorative plantings, and few people who look at them even know that instead of shrubs they are looking at food.

A few years I grew string beans up the awning poles. I treated is as an ivy not as a food crop. It looked nice and provided us with some food.

This is what people with a front yard garden really need to do, incorporate the veg into an ornamental (pretty) layout to disguise the 'farm'.

Do it that way and you are less likely to draw attention of code/law folk.

It's always in some lower middle class neighborhood that this sort of attempt at enforcement happens. That group has strong social mores, and sometimes the mores seem to make no sense.

In such a neighborhood, nobody's going to be astonished by the beautiful lawns. They are not beautiful lawns, they are little patches of grass.

If you go into a multimillion dollar area with big lawns of several acres, you'll see lots of people with visible gardens. And the neighbors would not think of complaining.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Alan Isaacman
The People Vs Larry Flynt
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. And that's not freedom. That is not freedom. So, be careful. Thank you."
