Currently looking in Virgo at an over-exposed Saturn.
In 1983, IRAS scanned nearly the entire sky as part of its infrared all-sky survey. Google uses this data to make its infrared layer on google sky, but they did not use the original data but instead a reprocessed version that omitted some glitches from the survey including Saturn. IRAS did not have a traditional CCD camera, it had a single column of pixels (advanced back then) that it scanned the sky with line by line. It scanned saturn twice during the survey, producing a double bright star that was not ideal for the purposes of an all-sky survey. A later distribution of the data omitted this part of the survey, hence the black box. I will now slew my infrared-sensitive telescope to those coordinates and show what is there.
