The letter "I" is the fifth most common letter used in the English language. Over the past several hurricane seasons, the "I" storm has been more often than not, infamous.
From 2001 through 2011, 7 of the 11 Atlantic "I" storms have been retired by a committee of the World Meteorological Organization. This is done when a storm is particularly deadly or costly such that the use of its name for another storm would be deemed insensitive.
Amazingly, two successive "I" names in the six-year cycle were retired during this stretch. "Ike" in 2008 was retired after replacing 2002's "Isidore". Similarly, "Igor" in 2010 was retired after replacing 2004's "Ivan."
The letter "I" is tied with "C" for most retired storms, with nine such storms. (Inez '66 and Ione '55 were the other "I" retirees.)
This is somewhat a function of the letter "I" being used for the season's ninth named storm. These seven retirees all occurred during the period from late August through early October, the heart of the hurricane season
