Heard also that the car was inspected immediately afterward and nothing unusual was found.

35 minutes is an awful long time to panic and have the presence of mind to call 911 but not try the maneuver that the highway patrol eventually suggested (lift the accelerator and press on the brake)

Over here, at that speed she would have been the slowest car on the Autobahn...

"the presence of mind" of calling 911??

It was obvious that she should try lift the accelerator and step on the brake! Or simply turn off the engine (without taking the key out, of course, otherwise the steering wheel would lock up).

She might have pushed the shifter to neutral but the engine will still redline and maybe thats why she thought it made no difference cuz it was still redlining it.. So maybe she put it back in drive lmao... U guys should see what i have to deal with on a regular as a mechanic.. I get in a car n theres like a ton of newspapers around the pedals.. Some people have a sreerin wheel cover that is 3x too big and wen u turn the wheel it slips because of the cover

They were actually going to try throwing the FOB out the window at one point. Just to see if that might work.

If her key wasn't actually present in the ignition, she wouldn't be able to shift gears... which makes me wonder how she got it in drive in the first place?!

Re: Woman covers 59 Miles in 35 Minutes with a stuck accelerator
The dispatcher asked her if she could put the shifter into neutral and the driver said it wouldn't move. Now in my experience I have yet to see any car or truck sold in the States that WOULDN'T freely go between drive and neutral without even having to pull a column lever or press a button.

Automatic drivers test this for me. Sitting in your driveway in drive just push forward on your shifter and it should go straight to neutral. Pull back and it should go straight to drive, no buttons needed.

fob key start mate.

you don't even need to put them in the ignition anymore, just have them on you.

brilliant, eh?

Its all in the Fob.

One of the latest technologies to come out are vehicles that no longer use 'keys' the way we think of them. Instead, they use something that looks like a car remote opening unit. These slide into a place in the car that allows the vehicle to read the information directly from the fob. Some of these key fobs don't even have to be inserted, they just have to be in the proximity of the vehicle (such as in your pocket or purse). Of course, these key fobs aren't to be confused with alarm or lock remote fobs.

I get that.. but .. never needing the key? What about all the "safety" features of key requirements? Maybe that's what they f****ed up? Or maybe she just didn't know how to drive...I just don't get it.

But you do need the key, the fob has to be in the car or it won't work. The only difference is you're not inserting it INTO the keyhole--it just has to be present. All the other "safety features" are still there. Also,
Every fob I have also has a plastic emergency key built in, so if your power fails, etc. you can still open the vehicle.
I think she just didn't know how to drive, or there really was some bizarre snafu with the vehicle she was driving.

well when you are trying to control a vehicle at those speeds i dont blame her a bit for a panic attack.

she did well to handle the situation..neutral seems the best to do at that speed

Re: Woman covers 59 Miles in 35 Minutes with a stuck accelerator
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Iowa woman whose accelerator got stuck as she drove up Interstate 35 in Missouri managed to control the vehicle even as speeds topped 110 mph and she was forced to the median several times to avoid other drivers, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said....

Osceola she was told to lift up the accelerator and push on the brake.

"And so I did that, and it slammed me from 119 mph to like nothing," she said.....

... Highway Patrol's headquarters in Jefferson City — told her to do, including trying to shift the vehicle into neutral. The vehicle had a "proximity key," Lyon said, which allows someone to start the car without a real key when they're close enough to it.

I would not recommend trying to turn the key off in a panic situation like this. Turn it too far and the steering wheel locks and now you have a much worse situation.

This story doesn't add up.

Wonder if the car's computer was being "remoted"?

Also kinda surprised she was able to control it at those speeds, it ain't exactly a race-car.

your car will stop.

It could have been due to the cruise control system locking up and going out of control. It would also explain why nothing was found wrong with the car.
