WARNING: Russians Dumped Old Nuclear Reactors and Radioactive Waste Into Sea

Per Strand of the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority told Aftenposten that the information on the radioactive waste had come from the Russian authorities gradually.

“No one can guarantee that this outline we have received is complete,” he said.

He added that Russia has set up a special commission to undertake the task of mapping the waste, the paper reported.

A Norwegian-Russian Expert Group will this week start an expedition in areas of the Kara Sea, which the report released by Russia says was used as a radioactive dump until the early 1990s.

The expedition will represent the first time Norway has participated in plumming the depths of Russian waters for radiactive waste since 1994, said Aftenposten.

Kudrik said that one of the most critical pieces of information missing from the report released to the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority was the presence of the K-27 nuclear submarine, which was scuttled in 50 kilometers of water with its two reactors filled with spent nuclear fuel in in Stepovogo Bay in the Kara Sea in 1981.

Information that the reactors about the K-27 could reachieve criticality and explode was released at the Bellona-Rosatom seminar in February.

“This danger had previously been unknown, and is very important information. When they search and map these reactors, they must be the first priority,” said Kudrik.

Researchers will now evaluate whether it is possible to raise the submarine, and attempt to determine if it is leaking radioactivity into the sea.

Russian authorities have disclosed the precise sites where four nuclear submarines laden with missiles and torpedoes have sunk as well as the locations near the Arctic island of Novaya Zemlaya where several Russian reactors and other radioactive waste were dumped over the last 30 years.

The disclosures are part of Russian-American negotiations on how to monitor the dumped radioactive material and do what is possible to prevent its escape.

The negotiators on the Russian side included leading military officials, submarine designers and nuclear engineers. The American delegation was led by Dr. Charles D. Hollister, a senior scientist of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Reactors Dumped at Sea

Besides four submarines lost at sea, the Russians have said that several decommissioned naval nuclear reactors were dumped in shallow waters in the Eastern Arctic. These include four submarine reactor compartments, dumped in the Abrosimov Gulf in 20 to 40 meters of water in 1965 and 1966.

Three reactors from the nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin were dropped into the Sivolky Gulf in 1967. A barge with a submarine reactor was sunk in the Kara Sea 1972. The submarine K-27 was jettisoned after an emergency with two fuel-laden reactors in Stepovov Gulf 1982. In 1988, a reactor was dumped with Techeniya Gulf.

For the record, it was Republicans Richard Lugar, and George Bush I, who led the way on exposing and cleaning up old Soviet Nuclear dump sites.

For some reason, Clinton decided this was not an issue he wanted to pursue with the Russians that took over after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Sinking nuclear waste into the ocean was banned in 1993.

The UK and Swiss sunk the most, the barrels sunk in the 50´s and 60´s are allready gone and in the food chain.

And in La´hague they still dump into the ocean, trough a pipeline.
