Anonymous Coward User ID: 22879989 ![]() 08/30/2012 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know that there were a few threads related to changes on the USGS website. ( Searchtards I did a search USGS Changes there was one post 4/10/12) Most Quaketards are likely aware of this format change to the Earthquake maps that happened earlier this week. The old format had a link on the USGS Home page where a user could see a Map of either the US or worldwide format. On the US page there were submaps of Alaska and the Caribbean. EQs were color coded red for last hour, blue last 24 hours, and amber last week. A click would zoom the map and a user could click on the square representing the EQ and find information. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1600127 The new format is terrible. Show the entire globe and difficult to navigate. Is this change related to increased seismic activity in the continental USA and stress on the Cocos, Juan de Fuca, and Carribean plates. Many areas of the US have been experiencing EQ activity along minor fault lines that have been considered dormant. In Oklahoma we have had EQ activity with mag 2 - 3 EQs for the last 2 years. Check out the new site and share your opinion on why the USGS has made the changes to the access on the information about EQs. Link [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] Once you apply YOUR GOD GIVEN MIND the new one actually works quite nicely. The US map is still working. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] the new system you can click on US at the top, and California, alaska Hawaii etc. The new system allows YOU to choose. I miss the red for new quakes but I can look at the list. The new site allows YOU to set your own settings as to size and other features, and no matter what you have selected, the menu on the left side shows HOW MANY in that area under yOUR Parameters. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19676829 [link to anf.ucsd.edu] USGS...You work for US! The People! This map absolutely STINKS. I do not waste my time on it anymore. They report lots of errors and then remove them and forget the most important. Besides UGUS for world quakes 4+ plus the euro med area smaller quakers, this is best available. [link to www.emsc-csem.org] This is the seismologist section and please to no think all those duplicate reporting stations are separate quakes. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 22879989 ![]() 08/30/2012 11:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I too am pissed off about the new changes to USGS. Quoting: djmasey25 I mean WTFU about the circles... I can't SEE ANYTHING! yes you can, ZOOM the area you are looking at, it works a lot like google earth, learn the features. The darker circles are newer quakes. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT AND THUS COME INTO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW THE SITE WORKS. YOU ARE STUCK WITH IT, SHOULD THEY ACTUALLY REMOVE THE OTHER PAGES, ALL OF WHICH ARE STILL FUNCTIONING THIS MORNING. THE OLD VERSION LINKS REMAIN ALSO ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1600127 ![]() 08/30/2012 11:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for the information on the new website Margaret. I have not had the time to check into the features on the new map. I am sure that I will find these useful, however, the tone of your first response was in my opinion UNNECESSARILY SNIPPY!!!! I find that most people who take the time to post topics for discussion on this website are sincere, very talented, intelligent. I hope you noticed I ENGAGED my brain when I formulated the original post and also corrected inaccuracies associated with the thread search in a followup post. Statements in posts, such as what you included in your first response ("use your god-given mind"), do nothing to further amiable discourse. A commodity which is unfortunately becoming a rare quality on this website. What say you? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1275429 ![]() 08/30/2012 07:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I agree with you OP. Hate it. Still working but says it is being phased out. I think it has to do with all the quakes that are happening now. The new way they are doing it is not as noticeable, as when they listed each invdividual quake out. And yes, I can read the new one....but STILL HATE it. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1275429 And yes, I can read the new one....but STILL HATE it. You just don't know how to use it. The new site is far superior. The one thing I don't like about it is the individual quake details (clicking the link twice). The old version has historical maps which I can't find on the new one. |
