...Oh dear...that old myth again. Little earthquakes do not let off enough stress to avoid a large earthquake...not unless theres a few million of them. You really need to do a little research before posting about the ignorance of other people.....there are thousands of documented earthquakes that had foreshocks leading up to the big one... Quoting: taniatarn Perhaps you should do some research. The Richter Scale is based on the Powers of 10. It takes 10 M5+ Earthquakes to equal the energy of (1) M6+ Earthquake. It takes 100 M4+ Earthquakes to equal the energy of (1) M6+ Earthquake. It takes 1000 M3+ Earthquakes to equal the energy of (1) M6+ Earthquake. It takes 10000 M2+ Earthquakes to equal the energy of (1) M6+ Earthquake. It takes 100000 M1+ Earthquakes to equal the energy of (1) M6+ Earthquake. It does not take Millions of Earthquakes to avoid a major earthquake. I do research but you don't. Herman shakes His Head. He Says. Before you criticixe someone. Check your facts. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22306955 Okay...i'll chuck some figures at you to make it easier to understand ( although you have just shown already that there is not enough small earthquakes happening to prevent the big one, even by your calculations but anyway....) A magnitude 1.2 quake releases energy equivalent to approx 1.1kg of tnt A magnitude 8.0 quake releases energy equivalent to approx 15.0 megatons of tnt ( which is 15,000,000 kgs ) so .....you would need approximately 13,636,363 of those magnitude 1.2 quakes to equal the energy release of the magnitude 8.0... Good come back - I wouldn't ve been able to fight that one. Good to know that we're on the same path. Little ones lead to the big one.
